Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Won't start 1998 GMC Jimmy 4X4 won't start when it gets cold. Changed the distributor cap, changed the starter. Happened 3 or 4 times last winter at -21C but okay at -20C. Wouldn't start this morning and it was +6C. Will turn over but won't catch; smells like its flooding. Suggestions?

Check the IAT(intake air temperature)sensor, if its bad may cause a no start situation and flooding, also check foe fuses to the ignition system and voltage to the coils

1998 gmc jimmy 6cylinder 4.3 4x4 no fuel and

If you changed your plugs, etc. and know that you are getting a good spark then it's really only 2 other things to check. The compression in that cylinder and the fuel. Check fuel pressure with gauge hooked up to Schrader valve on fuel line next to your distributor ( it has a black threaded cap on it). If pressure is good then you have either a dirty or clogged fuel injector or the injector quit working. Let me know what you find. Anytime you get a misfire in a particular cylinder, you should always check for spark, fuel and compression.

My 98;jimmy will not start engine turns but will not turn on

check for spark at the plugs then check for fuel. if one of these are missing the car won`t start. common problem on some of these was the ignition module in the distributor and sometimes the pickup coil wires would break. another thing to check is the distributor cap and rotor for damage like a cracked cap or burnt through rotor. fuel pump were also common.

2003 Nissan Terrano 4X4 won't start in the cold.

Make sure your battery connectors are clean it does not take much corrosion to stop the full current being available. Generally the more plates the better but I am assuming you are getting a decent battery, most carry 3 year warranty and many have the sight glass indicator if it is green the battery is good if it is black get another under warranty.

Can not get the timing set on 1998 GMC Jimmy 4.3 4x4

oh boy . here we go. this is the hardest timing to set. first lets do it the easy way. pull off the valve cover on the drivers side. why do it. well there is a exhaust top dead center and intake top dead center. on the harmonic balancer has two marks. you want the second make. when you are turning the motor by hand watch the marks and watch to see when the intake valve is at the top.now when you put the distributor in the number 6 on the distributor will be at where the number 1 spark plug ,but the rotor will be pointed between 1 and 5. i have done so many head gaskets on these motor. I have pictures I am going to find and help you

GMC safari won't start, new coil, ICM, plugs (delco) Wires, cap, rotor, get's gas, new starter.

This just happened to my Dad's 1998 GMC Safari...

Firstly...

Check the hard vacuum line as previously noted by others.
If that's ok, then take off the intake pipe and spray brake clean into the throttle body while trying to crank it.

If it starts.. then you have a fuel related issue, if it doesn't start then you have an electrical related issue.

Our van did not start after trying to use brake clean.

Take off the console inside the vehicle's cab and get at the distributor.

Usually people noted that the ICM (ignition control module, inside the distributor) was the main issue here, but on our van, the distributor and wires looked brand new so it was probably recently changed (we got this van 5 months ago), so I assumed the spark plugs were also changed at the same time.

We unplugged the connection from the coil to the distributor, tried to crank it, and no spark was being generated, boom, got a new coil and starts up fine.

Just takes a bit of trial and error.

97 gmc jimmy cranks but won't start, have replaced everything possible but still won't start, most of the time the brake lights won't work, or the gauges goes crazy. I have changed relays,...

There are two basic reasons for not starting - no spark or no fuel, both of which are controlled by the ECM. You need to check error codes and these items - for the spark, test it at the cylinder 1 sparkplug; for the fuel check the pressure (if too high or low, problem!).

Spark after i changed distributor cap but wont start

sounds like you haven't indexed the rotor correctly or the cap isn't seated correctly.  Did you replace the plug wires correctly?  Dis you bump the position of the distributor?

1998 Catera will not start if it sits overnight in cold weather

It can be worn distributor cap/rotor or coolant temperature sensor.
To check it leave car outside, try to activate if it is not use the hair fan and worm up the distributor cap area
http://www.autozone.com/Ntt,distributor%20cap/shopping/allResults.htm
If it helps replace the distributor cap/wiring/spark plugs. If it doesnot help warm up the coolant temperature sensor:
http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c15280090338
and, if no help, spurk plug area.
Also good idea in cold weather use higher octane fuel or regular with octane booster or injectror cleaner added and ask the mechenic to put winter oil (less viscous) for winter time during oil change.
Good Luck
