Having a hard time finding 1st gear. The other gears are fine just first gear. 1989 volkswagen cabriolet.

Sounds like the shifter may be wearing out. You may have to get into the transaxle to check it out. Could also be a problem with the alignment of the shift cable between the shifter and the trans.

My suv won't shift gears what can i do?

if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.

Would like to install an automatic car started in my manual 97 VW Jetta for minus 40c. Any suggestions?

two points to consider, one is if you can find one , two finding someone to do it, for proper installion the starter has to be linked to the parking brake and to the shifter or trans, if the car is not in neutral and parking brake on is should not function at all, too many stories about cars being started in gear. most people i know will not install one on a manual, shop insurance does not cover

How do I repair the gear shift?

Locate where the shift cable linkage mount to trans, check for good tight attachment to ball socket, then have some one move shift lever through gears watch to see if cable moves shift arm BOTH directions if not replace cable

Transmision Shifting Problem

Was the fluid you drained red or black? did it smell like trans or gear oil? With linkage disconnected, could you put trans in park by moving the lever on the side of the unit? Oil condition is likely a separate issue...most "blown" transmissions generally have normal operation of shift, it just dosen't do what you tell it to. two things likely going on are: linkage problem and likely in need of fluid/filter change.
