Question about 2005 Jeep Liberty

2 Answers

The mileage on my Jeep has dropped from 16 to 12 mpg in the last 3-4 weeks. I have been pulling a popup tent trailer behind it (only weighs about 1,600 lbs.), but the mileage drop has been evident even when not pulling the trailer. I have recently added both fuel injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner to my gas tank (not in the same tank of gas). And I just got my oil changed a couple of weeks ago (just checked to make sure oil level is OK - it is). What should I be looking at? Thanks.

These are the most common causes for bad mileage.
Tire pressure is a huge factor (Tire should be set at the factory recommendation or 1-2 psi above, but never below - Tire should also be a Low Rolling Resistance Tire)
Oil level (you said it's OK, so I assume it's not above the full mark)
Running extra accessories (A/C, etc)
Dirty Air Filter
bad Ignition timing
engine running hotter than normal
fuel injectors may be stuck partially open
bad fuel pressure regulator
faulty emission control device (this usually triggers a check engine light)

I want to put a camper that weighs 2450 on my 1990 F250 as well as haul a 2-horse slant load trailer behind--will that work?

You can put anything on the vehicle that you want and it will work. The question is for how long and how long before the highway people pull you up and order you off the road. If you add up what you want to do. The camper weighs 2.5 tons on the back of a 2.5 ton vehicle ( fully loaded to start with) next you want to put a trailer behind it ( probably 1.5 tons ) and then put 2 horses in the trailer ( average a horse 1.000lb each) and you get the picture. The economy will be less than 10 mpg and the transmission will be overworking not to mention the diff as well. Best suggest is to go back to the drawing board and get a 4.5 ton vehicle to start with

When the battery went dead you engine control module lost all learned programming, drive it for a few weeks as normal to restore this and the mileage will be back to normal.

I have been logging my gas mileage on my Jeep Grand Cherokee for the last 9 years. My jeep has a Straight 6 cylinder motor, that has given me about 17mpg city and 23 mpg highway. This last summer my jeep...

I would start by pulling a spark plug and looking at condition. With that kind of mileage, has it ever had a valve job? Valve's burn and valve springs get weak, could have a carbon problem. Also compare the brands of fuel you're using, many have changed their formulas - I've noticed it with my own cars. Also have your mechanic do a compression test.

I think the tongue weight rating on the stock hitch is 600 lbs, so you are over that. You probably want to level out truck to handle better when towing, so the best way is to get air bag helper that raises the back end.

Price is not bad, the motor set up is a great motor. I have never heard of any major problems with it. You will not get 12 mpg unless you are pulling empty on a level surface or a downgrade. A more realistic number will be 8-10 mpg with a loaded trailer at normal speeds. If you travel around 55 on highways you may be able to average 12 depending on conditions. You may also look to make sure it has a transmission cooler and weather or not it has turbo. All of these things will effect your mileage.

No problem for a standard transmission, however an automatic you may like to add a transmission fluid cooler !

Poor gas mileage on my jeep liberty

change your spark plugs if they haven't been changed in awhile. check your tires for the propper psi there should be a sticker on the inside of your drivers door that will tell you recomended air pressures go by this not the recomendations on the tires. also where are you getting you gas does it contain ethanol sometimes this can burn faster.
