  1. Lift the car so you can work from underneath when needed.
  2. Disconnect the battery . Just to be safe.
  3. Take the serpentine belt off.
  4. Remove the alternator.
  5. Remove the A/C compressor. (You can do it without removing, but it's a royal PITA... LOL) Don't unhook the lines, just unbolt and move out of the way.
  6. Remove the worn tensioner from t he block. (You need to unbolt the pulley first to get to all the tensioner bolts)

I just replaced my belt on my 2004 Pontiac Gandam with the smaller 4 in it. I didn't need to lift it in the air however, I did have to loosen the tension pulley completely and drop the alternator. I didn't need to remove the alternator but simply loosen It enough to lower it. It did require the bottom bolt to be removed but only the top bolts loosened. I had extra hands helping me and once the belt was on I put the alternator back in it's place and kept the tension pulley loosened. With another set of hands I was able to place tension on the belt with the pulley held in place while I tightened the bolt to the tension pulley. Wala belt on. HOWEVER the only issue I am having is the belt is still squealing as if it was slipping. No More tension can be applied to the tension pulley. I am no pro at this job but could use some in put on how to remedy the problem or if perhaps the Pulley isn't sitting right? I haven't had the convience of a mechanic due to expense so I have always done my own repairs within my abilities to my vehicles. This particular one is being a bit tricky as I never had a problem once replacing the belt on a Grand Am my friends owned. Replaced their alternator and had to basically do all of what I just did to it. I have small hands being a woman so I can get my hands into those tight places such as on my grand am between the firewall and tension pulley.
So does anyone have any suggestions on what may be cAusing my new belt to squeal? Is it too tight possibly? Never thought that could be an issue but as I am not a super mechanic I am unsure of the exact issue. It feels tight but almost too much so, and the pulley can not tighten more. Should I back it off a bit?

How to put supertine belt on 2004 grand prix

Under the hood there will be a routing diagram for the serpentine belt. Use that as a guide for replacement routing. There is an automatic belt tensioner in the loop. Use an appropriate tool to release the tension on the old belt and remove it from the vehicle. Route the new belt as per the diagram and allow the automatic tensioner to re-tension the belt.

Serpentine belt

if there is no location specifically for a breaker bar the most common practice is to take a socket and attach it to the center nut in the pulley. then move it counter-clockwise. this will apply enough torque to loosen the belt and slide it off.
