It sounds like your car is having intermittent misfires as it is only happening under load. This is really hard to diagnose based on a description.
You could be getting a bad air/fuel mixture, bad wiring, bad rings, oil or coolant leak into the engine, etc...
Scan the car with an OBD tool to see what the code is as that will help narrow down the cause.

If the fuel filter is clogged it would restrict gas, not increasing consumption. Regarding the check engine light: Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that none are still active.
There is somthing causing excessive fuel consumption, I'll bet the tailpipe inside is black.
I think i would start by cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor and then go to the engine codes. Be careful NOT to spray directly at the small wire inside housing. Caution all types of cleaners are very flammable ""Do Not Smoke"" No Open Flames.. Good luck.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. There are few possibilities that can cause engine misfire issues. It can be issue with spark plugs or faulty spark plugs. Also get the compression test done for cylinders. If any of cylinder shows low compression then required, then that particular cylinder will cause misfire.

Also get obd codes scanned, the error code will let you know which cylinder is misfiring or all cylinders are misfiring.

I have a 98 honda accord 5 spd it has a 4cyl motor vtech i just need to know how to fix a miss fire in cylinder 2 and wich one is cylinder 2

Cylinder #2 is the the second spark plug counting from the right to left.
EX.Below are spark plug on engine
engine
-------------------------------
' (oil cap) '
' (4) (3) (2) (1) '
'_________________'

Your misfire can be cause by couple of things but the cheapest way that you can try to fix your car is to do a tune up by replacing:
1)all spark plugs
2)do a oil change
3)spark plug wires
3)distributor cap and rotor

note misfire can be cause by:
1.bad gas
2.spark plug and/or wire
3.distributor cap and/or rotor
4.valve adjustment
5.injector
6.off timing
7.ECM
8.bad wiring(power, ground or feed line)

Hey guys i have a 2000 intrepid with a used engine just put in. at high rev the check engine light flickers then goes off. Took a trip to West Linn OR from Weiser ID, on the way back the check engine light...

Dysturbedr1,
In a word, NO- don't worry about the gel. There are 2 different kinds of "goop" that is sold for installing new plugs- one is to lubricate the spark plug threads, and the other (which I think you are calling the "gel") is to lubricate the boot and direct fire coilpacks. These are for making it easier to install and replace your plugs and coilpacks....nothing more.
The flickering check engine light is indicative of a misfire condition, which makes sense since your codes said the same thing. The most common cause for this is using a non-premium grade of gasoline or a gas with a high ethanol content (very common in the Mid-West) in a high compression engine such as yours. I had a 2001 Subaru with a high compression 3.0L 6 cylinder engine that did the exact same thing.... it ran fine, but a lower grade of gas would cause a "misfire" code. This is because lower grades of gas burn hotter and the piezo sensors in your engine are very sensitive- the explosion that takes place in a cylinder is much more pronounced with a lower grade gas to the sensor, even though it sounds fine to human ears.
Fill your car with permium, then go back to autozone and have them clear the codes. You will probably not have it happen again unless you go back to a lower gas grade.... and stay away from the Idaho Gasahol!

Good Luck, and Thank You for using FixYa!

P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.

Possible Causes:
- Improper spark plug at cylinder #1
- Insufficient compression at cylinder #1
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- The injector circuit is open or shorted at cylinder #1
- Fuel injector #1 may be faulty
- Intake air leak at cylinder

Possible Solutions:
- Perform Injector Service
- Replaced Spark Plug #1
- Replaced Injector #1
- Replaced Ignition Coil #1

Being you have a heavy gas smell I would look into the injectors. If injector #1 is over producing it can cause a misfire. Test your compression and fuel pressure.

I have a 2003 mitsubishi galant ES 4 cylinder and have a check engine light message on i had the code read at auto zone and they told me the third cylinder is misfiring and when it idles it jumps around...

Misfire means you need spark plugs replaced. Or spark plug coils.

That's why the whole car starts shaking because its running basically on 3 cylinders and not 4 as supposed. There is no gas compression on the 3rd cylinder because once again the spark plug is "misfiring"

There also might be even a bigger problem which could be the distributor cap where the coils are connecting outside the engine.
once you fix the problem the check engine will turn off immediately

hope that helps.

My check engine light is on and the code is reading p0304 what could be the problem

You have a Misfire at Cylinder #4 meaning:
Dirty, fouled or malfunction Spark Plug at #4 Cylinder. Remove the Spark Plug and check the igntion (spark end).
Ignition (Spark Plug) Wire malfunction for #4 Cylinder.
Misfire from the Coil/Distributor at the #4 connection from Cylinder #4.
Get a Spark Plug/Wire/Coil/Distributor tester and check the Spark Plug, Wire and Coil.
I always recommend changing everything in sets meaning: Change all Spark Plugs and Wires.

Hi, it might be caused by an oil ring on the piton that broke or pistons that is damaged. If you do a compression test, you will be able to find out at which cylinder the engine is misfiring and then you will need to take the cylinder head off to determine the extent of the damage.
