Connect an ammeter between either of the battery cables and the battery. Start pulling fuses 'till the draw either disappears or drops substantially. That system will be the draw source, then you will need to test each item on that circuit to determine which one has a problem.

Battery Keeps Draining

If the battery discharges by leaving it shut off you can rule out the belt or the battery terminals. The battery is new so it shouldnt be bad, and you have had it tested along with the alternator so both of those should be ruled out as not being problematic. It sounds like you have a massive parasitic drain in your electrical system. Ultimately something is closing the loop between the + and the (-) sides of your battery via your extensive electrical system. Granted, finding the source of the problem will be headache lol. Hope this helps

You need to remove your positive connection at the battery first. Now you connect one end of test light to battery clamp, and the other to battery. Make sure they have good contact. Test light will light up anytime there is a draw. The brighter the light, the more draw there is. Start by removing one fuse at a time and watch for light to go out, or at least dim quite a bit, and leave it out & record which one it was. The ideal way to do it is to remove all fuses, making sure light is out completely, then start re-installing them and watch for one that light comes on bright. That will tell you which circuit is causing the excess draw. If you think that will get you in trouble, or confused, just pull one at a time and if no difference in light, put it back in. Just leave those that make light dimmer, out, making sure you note where they go. That way if you have 2 or 3 with slight draw, (like radio, clock etc.,) but 1 with big draw, then you can zero in on that circuit as the culprit. Take's a little time, but it works.

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser Platinum series with a 2.4 liter engine, wjhat is a suitable replacement battery for this car; Sears die hard or interstate ?

Sears Diehard or Interstate would make a battery for your vehicle. Look for something with over 600 cca and you should be ok for the winter.

Diehard makes a Platinum battery, but it costs over $189.99.
Diehard Gold batteries are like $109 or so.

Walmart sells batteries that are comparable to the Diehard Gold for under $100.

However, I just bought a Platinum battery for my 1997 Cadillac Deville Limo and it seems to work alright so far and has a 4 year free replacement warranty.

In general, the more you pay, the better the battery up to the 'best' which is the Diehard Platinum.
Walmart and Interstate do not offer a battery that has as long of a warranty or as good of a design as the Platinum from Diehard which uses proprietary technology to get a better warranty than normal.

The Platinum name in the PT Cruiser has nothing to do with the Platinum name for Diehard, by the way.

Good luck on finding a suitable replacement battery for your 2004 PT Cruiser Platinum.

Have a 01 Tahoe with new red top and fairly new alternator. It charges at about 14v. But if I leave the Tahoe set for a week, it wont start.Where do I look for a voltage leak. The Tahoe seems to be working...

Start with the basics; Is the reason the car does not start is that the battery is discharged after a week of sitting or a case that it won't start without a jump although the battery is still good. If the car just does not start after sitting then try the following; Pull the negative battery cable and let the car sit overnight. Reconnect the cable in the morning and see if it starts. If it does then you are looking for something that is pulling current from the battery. Could be lots of things; light on in the glove box or trunk, a short in a wire, etc. You can try pulling a couple of fuses each evening and in the morning, replace the fuses and see if the car will start after sitting. If it continues to discharge the battery then try another set of fuses. The day it starts after sitting then you have narrowed the electrical system that is discharging your battery. Focus on those systems

2005 checy tahoe battery keeps dieing every 2 - 3 days replaced battery and alternator seems fine any ideas? just replaced heated mirrors but they are disconnected now and still same problem.

There is a way you can isolate the draw with a 12 volt test light. If you have one, or can get one (about $5) get back to me, I'll explain. Takes a little time, but at least will narrow the circuit down.

One year old battery kept dying. It tested bad and

There is some things to check....

(1) Is your alternator charging? take your vehicle to Advanced Autos, Napa or someone like that and have them test your alternator.
(2) Is there something in the vehicle causing excessive drain on the battery when the motor is not running... like is the interior light may be on or something to that affect.
(3) Are you doing enough driving to recharge your battery? short stops and starts is not good for a battery as you may rob more energy from the battery then you are putting back in.
Sounds like something is draining your battery, something must be left on in the vehicle, Advanced Autos or Napa should be able to tell if something is draining your battery when the vehicle is off.

Chevy tahoe 1997, keeps killing battery.

Hi maad451,
That is a tough one, you definitely have a draw on the battery.
If the electric shop can't find it you can try and narrow it down yourself.
A couple of ways to do this,
With a multimeter check the amps from the battery, once you have a good reading start pulling fuses until you see the amp flow decrease.
If your are able to narrow it down to the components of that fuse you will be closer.
If you have the time you can just pull a couple of fuses and wait and see if the battery drains, this method is very time consuming.
A couple of things to look for, do you have an amplifier on your stereo?
Make sure your brake lights are not staying lit.
Please rate this solution, the only compensation I receive is a good rating from you.
