Question about 1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

1 Answer

Erratic idle My 1998 W202 has been at the Merc Agents for 2 months and they are unable to fix it. Symptoms: When the car is started, the idle is not steady, however after it has idled for a few minutes, the rev's drop to below normal and the car then rev's higher and lower repeatedly and then switches off. Initially if I started it again, it would operate perfectly allowing me to drive. Whilst driving, after 15-20 minutes, the car will switch off on its own. I then start it immediately and continue driving. The agents diagnosed the problem and replaced the key. This has not resolved the problem and the car is still the same. They now want to replace the ignition. Please help!

It is not the ignition problem, it is a fuel delivery problem. 1- First need to clean very well the throttle valve to remove built up gums. 2- Make sure the vacuum hose connected to area near the throttle valve not clogged up, rubber connection is tight or replace them. After this still not improving, need to replace fuel filter. If it still not improving, have the fuel delivery rate checked, before changing the fuel pump. Good luck.

Our 1998 XJ8L sits idle for months at a time. Tried to start yesterday after 2 months idle. Turns over but won't start.

Try pumping the accelarator about 4 times before cranking it over. If that doesn't work prime with some fresh fuel and it should start up.
