Several things to consider- check your brake fluid level if your brakes have been 'soft'. think there's a sensor connected to your master cylinder (has your brake fluid in it) (the master cylinder). there are 2 fluid sections (so if one has a leak somewhere in the brake system, the other will still give you braking power! wonderful invention!)
This sensor detects brake fluid pressure, and tells your transmission shifter that it's safe to shift into drive, or reverse. there may also be a mechanical switch under the brake pedal that performs the same function. not sure which your vehicle has.
could be a loose wire, a failed sensor or switch. shouldn't be terribly expensive to fix, but you need a handy friend or a tow to get you to a repair facility! CHECK THAT FLUID LEVEL!!
good luck!

Two possibilites are a blow fuse or a failed relay. look in the fuse panel under the dash. there are other reasons that can fail but those are the most likely.

The first thing to do is check the brake lights, it they are not working the park lock system will not release the shifter.

Can shift without applying brakes

There should be a cable that goes from the key lock to the shifter. That cable may be broken. There should also be a lock solenoid that requires you to push on the brake pedal to get the shifter out of park.
You would need to disassemble the console to get access to the shifter and then inspect these components.

Gear shift stuck in park

there is a u shaped clip that holds handle on stem, pull that and then pull handle off and then push down on the white stick that is in center of shifter and see if it can move out of park then, also make sure your foot is on brake ! if that that does'nt work then there is a little solenoid down by shifter that has to move when you put foot on brake so's that it will let you shift it (safety device) it may be bad or bad connection.

My 1994 toyota Corolla will not switch out of park to reverse or drive and the brake lights won't come on no matter how hard I press on the brakes. I have changed the brake light switch and even...

There is a small plasic acess cover (1/2" x1/2") on the base of the shifter. Pry it open and press the button. You should immediately be able to shift. The button is needed because the sensor on your brake pedal is broken (won't activate your brake lights either). Use the button on your shifter to get your car home or to the mechanic so you can get the brake switch fixed. Remember whern you drive you have no brake lights. -Mark

My Gear shift won't move from park to drive! Am pushing the release button but it won't press either! I also tried steppind the brakes to release the shifter but nothing happened pls help

Make sure your brake lights are working? if they are not then you need to change the brake light switch, the power to the shifter is through the brake light switch. Its a common problem.

When I want to pass from park to drive, it is stuck to park. Motor is running normally. please help...

If the vehicle will not shift out of park, a brake light switch or shift lock solenoid is most likely the problem.

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.
