What is the proper technique for replacing batteries in the 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 HD 4WD Diesel pickup, without messing up the computer in the system?

Disconnecting the batteries will not mess up the computer the only thing it will do is erase the kam which the computer will relearn within three times of driving, if you are worried about erasing the kam most diesels have more than one battery and they are usually connected so you can replace only one at a time and have no worries if the vehicle only has one battery they do sell power savers that you can plug into your cigarette liter and keep the computer "alive"

Just be sure to change both batteries, having one new and one old will throw the batteries off after awhile one will drain one will over charge making it boil out and killing you new battery faster

look for a serious exhaust or intake leak. look for bad wires to the o2 sensor or map sensor. just for starters.

No it's not too hard. Just needs spring compressor, and socket set.

There was not a recall, but there was a class action settlement where GM agreed to extend the warranty on certain vehicles for this problem. Check www.gmspeedometerrecall.com to see if you qualify.

Thats it ,oh and a hammer to knock it out of the knuckle.Some guys tighten the axle nut back up with a torque wrench.
