Engine experiences extended cranking to start it at times

1988 Dodge D150 Pickup Engine experiences extended cranking to start at times, but, not all the time. Sometimes it will start right up, other times it won't. If I turn key switch to run position for about 5 seconds before I turn it to start position it will start right up every time.

Listen at the fuel tank when the key is turned on. The pump should run for a short time and shut off. If it continues to run, the pump is worn out and should be replaced. The fuel filter should be replaced if it hasn't been done lately.

How do I reset the maint. req. light on my 1988 Dodge LE150 pickup?

Chrysler and Dodge models: 1988-92
When "SERVICE" appears on the Vehicle Maintenance Monitor, press the "RESET" button located directly below the monitor. "MONITOR" should then appear on the display.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day

Does a1987 Dodge 150 pickup truck 4x4 have a fuel regulator? If so where is it located?

if it starts OK when warm , but not when cold , I would say it is the temperature sensor, sometimes on the intake manifold, engine block, or even the radiator, but don't confuse it with the fan sensor on the rad.

I have Dodge Ram D150 1988 with 318Cu engine. I am restoring it and it has stood still for 4-5 years. The problem is that I have gotten it to run but know it´s starts but it´s like it...

-If it has Distributor Cap and Rotor check them and their contact point should not be rusty, cut/worn. Rotate Distributor assly for getting a better synchronization/timing.
- check you have fuel pressure at fuel rail.
- is the fuel fresh. Spray some starting fluid in the air intake. If it starts up then problem is with fuel.

I have a 1993 dodge d150 318 no spark or no power to fuel pump could it be the crank sensor?

A BAD CRANK SENSOR WOULD NOT CAUSE A LOSS OF POWER TO THE FUEL PUMP. ARE U SURE ABOUT THAT, THE FUEL PUMP ONLY RUNS FOR 1 SECOND WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED ON UNBLESS ENGINE IS STARTED. DO A FAULT CODE TEST ON THE COMPUTER, GO TO THE WEB LINK FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND A FAULT CODE LIST, VERY EASY TO DO.

My Dodge 1985 d150 won't start. New starte,

if you hear a loud click from starter it could be the motor contacts in the starter have gone bad. you will have to remove starter and have it repaired or replaced. check again to make sure that the battery is charged up on truck. also check for a loose ground wire to starter or engine block.

1990 DODGE D150 WON'T START WHEN HOT

There is a temp. sensor on the exhaust manifold that I just switched out on car that done the same thing it would start when cold but once it was hot and you killed the car it would not start back. When this goes bad its throwing the wrong signal to the computer that it is too hot and allowing it not to crank. This sensor was on the left side of the engine if your facing the car from the front. Also It can be tested with a multimeter to see if it is bad.
