Question about 1989 Toyota Corolla 2 Door

The overdrive on an '89 Corolla FX cuts out randomly then after 10 minutes or so comes back on again. It goes out of overdrive with the overdrive 'on' even at a constant speed, and then after about 10 minutes if I remove my foot from the accelerator briefly the overdrive will come back on (I keep trying that randomly once it cuts out but it takes about 10 minutes before it has any effect). gearbox oil has been changed and that made no difference. Electrical fault? or gearbox problem?

    Sorry buddy. I'm in NZ, there is no scrappage scheme. It's a friends car and it's just a temporary cheepie while she is out of work.

    It's not a big deal as the car runs fine otherwise. Just a tad annoying.

    Thanks alicantecoli, yes the Americans are taxing on the brain LOL and I hear you on the auto - car belongs to a female friend. There is a small button on the gear change lever that swtiches overdrive on or off, so you are quite possibly correct about it being a solonoid. I will check on the weekend to see if this could be the problem.

    sorry do apologise ,these americans do tax my brain a bit so i can get a bit abrupt,but as your a colonial cousin first class lets see what we can sort out.Now if its an auto and its dropping out of top so too speak then ,you will need to determine if the gear is electricaly operated or hydraulic ,cant say iave evan seen a auto corrola here in spain because they are very macho orientated and autos are for old women from northern europe,but that said then lets work this one out.If you can have a look and see if their is a solonoid somewhere like at the back of the box wheelarch area ??iam trying to think on how it would work ------now i would think that when the overdrive switch is on this allows the solonoid to open a valve that allows oil pressure to operate the piston that engages the gear,so either the switch is dirty and the contacts need cleaning inside the switch ,or where the solonoid opens the valve allowing the oil through is a bit bunged up ,or their is a lack of oil pressure.Check the oil level first by applying handbrake hard on and starting engine and putting in reverse,then check oil level if it needs topping up then this might cure it but ?? iam on the other side of the word in spain and i cant just lift the bonnet and have a shuftie to check out the layout and try to diagnose something .

    iam trying to answer some more question on fixya but i dont think that the school system in america is up to much ,,,what does DA mean or clotch and as for a pigs tail..... I mean ?? But still i will persevere if only to help keep the americans giving our troops fire support so long as they know the difference between troops in uniform and ragheads.Anyway check the oil level first with engine running,But iam thinking it could be a worn operating piston as well ,but check oil first then try stripping and cleaning the contacts in the switch and see what happens

Hi Mathew, The 89 Corolla usually has front wheel drive and a combined gearbox and differential. If the box is a manual it uses a 65 w 70 HP oil. If it is automatic it uses ATF in the gearbox which is usually also combined, but some have separate diffs and use the 65 w 70 in the diff section. Regards John

02 Jeep Grand Cherokee jumps out of overdrive while driving on highway.

The torque converter is where OD takes place. Look at your transmission fluid cooler to see if it's blocked. The TCM module controls the OD functions so it may not be sending the correct signals.

Security light comes on at random, car cuts off at random

cataylic converter needs replaced,,,replace oxygen sensors and crankshaft sensors,,,,check plugs and coil,,,,,converter backs uptoo much heat back to motor and sensors,,,

The service light is a reminder for you to have the car serviced, it can be reset, and it will come on again in 5,000 miles or so.

The overdrive light may be caused by the wiring to the overdrive solenoid on the transmission, or the relay. Just be sure the wiring is ok before replacing the relay, or you can damage the new relay.

1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.
