Question about 1987 Ford F 150

1 Answer

I have been working on a 1987 F-150 6 cyl.FI and it wont run above 1000 rpms, and it runs rough, like a convertor is plugged and exaust cant escape....except that convertor is long gone, and I cut the pipes before the mufflers to see if they were plugged...customer stated that it started to lose power on his way home from work...and next day drove it till it would not pull its own weight...so far I have changed the plugs, drained the gas and droppred the tank to check primer pump along with checking pressure pump on the frame rail...also changed fuel filter....and also the thing that confuses me the most is that the temperature gets hot really fast on it when you start it....just barely stays running and revs alittle and then slowly dies out..will restart, but gets hot and does the same thing...any ideas on where to turn....Lee

I have heard of double wall exhaust pipe that will form a bubble on the inside of the tube not visible from the outside. I would disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold and check for obstruction. It does sound like an exhaust restriction to me too.

How to adjust idle

Should idle between 550 or 650 RPMs. If it wont stay running under 1000 RPMs there is something wrong. Idling at or above 1000 RPMs it' going to be slamming into forward and reverse.

Car will start and run, then when I shut it off it wont start back up after sitting for a half hr of so

Check the catalytic converter it is probably plugged and not allowing fuel into the cyl. due to putting back pressure on the engine. If possible pull the 02 sensor out of the exhaust ahead of the catalytic converter and if it is plugged you should have the car to run. It will run rough but if it starts it is the problem.

'86 honda accord 4 cyl...runs very rough as though missing on 1 cyl ...when removing plug wires 1 at a time each 1 removed makes engine run worse except for #1 cyl which when removed smooths engine out...

no, the plug is firing. But the timing is off. the plug is firing quite a bit before top dead center on that cylinder. The burning of the fuel mixture is occurring while that piston is on its way up and is slowing it down---dragging down the whole engine. i think you should change the distributor cap and rotor as cylinder one is firing at the same time as cylinder 2or 4. This indicates a possible carbon track in the distributor cap.

I have a 2002 f150 4.6 codes p1131-p1151-po316-po306 runs bad under 1000 rpms wont idle going down road stumbles at steady 45 mph not sure what to do next what do u think

p0306 is a cyl #6 misfire
p0316 is unknown to me. sry.
p1131 and p1151 deal with the O2 sensors 1151 says Bank 2 Sensor #1 Heater Circuit intermittent. 1131 says that HO2S 11 indicates lean.

p0306. Check the plugs wires and coil at Cyl #6 (second one back from front on drivers side, if it's the same as my Stang)

Idles rough ,loss of power ,sounds like its running on 2 or 3 cyl. changed fuel filter no diff. maybe a bad coil, 2003 beetle 1.8 turbo 4 cyl

I had this same problem on mt 2004 jetta. It had 85,000 miles on it. one day it bagan to idle rough but seemed fine when at higher sppeds/rpms. after a weekm I took it to the dealership and it turned out that a few of the coils/springs were shot. they also replaced my spark plugs, costing me about $550 total. But the car runs great again.
