Question about Chevrolet 3500

Need assistance ,restoring a bed 0n a 1954 1/2 ton chevy

OK, help would be greatly appreciated, I bought a 1954 chev 1/2 ton pick up in boxes
from all the research I have found that 1954 is the only stand alone year that is different than all the others.

my question is in multiple parts I am trying to put the bed back together and it appears that the only thing holding the bed ''weight'' is the cross members attached to the frame but only to the bed wood ,that appears to me to mean that the whole weight of the bed is relying on the crossmembers but the cross members only bridge the weight at the boards .
the rest of the weight is held by the few bolts holding the corner strips of the bed wood,(IS THAT POSSIBLE)

does the question make sence ,
is there a referance drawing or diagram to refere to.
I am at a stand still trying to do it right.

My emai is stevenavarro1213@aol.com Help please!!

what is the ''off center '' washers for in the bed wood

I use to have a '50 Chevy with wooden slats in the bed too. In it's bed, the wood/metal trim/wood/metal trim, was supportted by several smaller I-beams (3 or 4) and those beams boltted to the trucks main two I-beams. The metal box frame of the bed had small (1/2") metal flanges (all but the tailgate) that the wood and metal trim rested in. And I believe the odd shaped washer are to take into account for expantion of the wood.
Hope this helps.

Faxonautoliterature lists a build manual for your truck for $30. I bought one for my 82 Chevy and it is a copyof the instructions for each station on the assembly line. Could be exactly what you are looking for. They also have the dealer service manual for under $50. Hope this helps.

I am looking to buy a chevy 1/2 ton pick up, automatic, and need to know how to find out what the transfer case is. I have been told 203, or 205...

the 203 transfer case is operated by a metal chain/belt. the 205 is all gear driven.(lasts longer than 203) most 1/2 ton chevy trucks have the 203 if they have the automatic. some of the newer ones have the 208. hope this helps.

I have a 2001 chevy silverado pick-up, regular cab, with a tow/haul option. How much weight can I safely haul on the highway in the bed? GVWR is 6100 lb, 3686 lb on the rear, but what is the curb...

Here is a link to specs for that year model of truck, I would need more info such as auto/manual, and 4x4 or not. Anyway it's an easy chart to read. But technically speaking a 1/2 ton pickup is only rated to carry 1,000 lbs in the bed. I wouldn't personally suggest doing more than that, if you overload the bed you can have trouble steering and stopping. I hope this Helps please rate this thank you
