Remove both belts again and start the engine--is it now quiet? If not, then there is something mechanically wrong within the engine. If it is quiet, shut the engine off and try to turn each of the pulleys in the normal direction (except the crankshaft at the bottom) while checking for noise, looseness, or hard-to-turn condition. If nothing is obvious, put the serpentine belt back on and run the engine again--any noise? Try the v-belt, does the noise come back? What does the v-belt turn and what drives it? The serpentine belt usually drives everything the car needs. It is strange that both belts would break at the same time.

This may not be your problem but worth checking. I fixed a simular problem with an engine. Some part of one of the belt's got to the timing belt going around the crankshaft causing it to slip a few nicks in the timeing I got it sorted with no other damage to the engine. The only problem you may have is it seems you drove it after you heard it knocking. If the engine is not blowing a lot of smoke or any blue smoke (burning oil) from the tail pipe then it may be ok yet. When the belts broke Did you overheat it before you stopped it if so this may have blown the engine if not it's something simple as the only thing driven by these belts that would blow the engine is the water pump

Something like this is hard to diagnose without having the car. What I can say is if the car ran fine before the belt broke then there is a good chance that the problems you are now dealing with are caused by overheating. Once the water pump stops turning the engine can no longer be cooled. If this happened then there's a good chance that the heads were warped. This would cause the loss of power and the knocking. This does not mean the engine is shot. I would never let a mechanic touch my car if the only answer he could give me was "your engine's shot" A good mechanic will be able to tell you why and exactly what needs to be done to fix it. They should be able to diagnose a problem like this relatively quickly. Signs you can look for are white, sweet smelling smoke coming out of the tail pipe. Also check your oil. A milky appearance would also indicate a blown head gasket or warped head. If you want to diagnose this your self a thirty dollar compression tester will do. Just remove the fuel pump relay to disable the car. Then remove the spark plugs. Screw the compression tester into each spark plug hole and turn the vehicle over for about 5 to 8 seconds. Call the dealership service and ask what the normal compression should be and compare it to yours. I believe it's around 175lbs. There should not be a a difference of more then 23lbs between the cylinders. If there is or you get low readings then it's the heads. But they can be resurfaced and re used so even this does not mean your engine is shot.
The best thing you can do is find a good mechanic that can give you more details then the last two.
I really hope this helps. Good luck.

How long did you keep driving the car after the belt broke? The engine is cooled by the water pump, the pump works only with the belt.If the cars engine was hot (normal at 212 degrees) and the belt broke that runs the water pump, and you kept driveing even a short distance you could have overheated the engine. If the knock is a deep solid sound the piston connecting rod bearings spun and the engine needs repaired or replaced. Its sad to say but an engine without a water pump is just like a person trying to live without a heart. If the heart stops the person stops.

On the 3.5 liter v6 motors used on the Chrysler LH platform (300m, Intrepid, Concorde, LHS), the water pump is driven by the timing belt. There is a serpentine belt which drives the power steering pump and alternator, and a v-belt which powers the ac compressor. You can drive any vehicle powered by this motor until the battery dies... though, without the use of power steering, it's extremely difficult to turn at low speeds.

Your broken belt may have hit something when it broke. Does it click-click-click, or no responce to 'start' possition at key?
Might have knocked large battery cable, or small starter wire loose (or cut it 'open'), or some ground-wire, or ignition wire, or module/harness connector loose.

Why is engine knocking?

the serpentine belt is an accessory drive belt --a/c --alternator--power steering--water pump--etc it does not have affect on timing ---if you have an engine knock while running that would more than likely be a "rod knock" "piston knock" from a burnt main bearing, piston wrist pin ,damaged rod --if your timing was off poor running ,misfire,no start ,banging in upper engine valves hitting piston,

My steering stopped working but as long as I wasn't turning right or left the van ran well but then it starting having a knocking sound and now it won't turn over. It isn't out of oil. Help!

Check your serpentine belt in the engine compartment. It could have broke which would explain the power steering pump failing and now the battery could be dead since it was not being charged. If it is the belt, once it is replaced you should only need to jump the battery.

The serpentine belt broke on my2002 subaru outback

There is a distinct possibilty there is engine damage caused when the belt broke. It is best not to turn the engine at all once this happens. Sometimes you can be lucky and there be no damage. Let's hope that's so in your case. These belts are supposed to be replaced every 100,000km.

It's important to know the routing of the new belt when you replace it. There should be a routing diagram in the engine compartment near the top of the radiator. If you don't see one, you can use this diagram as a guide...

Get yourself a compression tester and remove all spark plugs and proceed to check the compression for this motor the readings should all be above 110 psi, the car may have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and requires a new belt to be installed.
