1998 Corvette won't shift out of park when brake is on

My automatic shift will not shift out of park even with the brake on. When I press on the shifter button, it won't engage. The normal clicking out of gear never happens. Could it be as easy as a brake transmission shift interlock fuse?

Could be but you wouldn't be here asking us if it was now, would you...lol. It is posible that the fuse is blown but more likley that the release solenoid either has a loose harness connection, or is failing. You can tell quite easily by listening closely while you press the brake without the engine running but with the key in the run position. You should hear a dull clicking sound at the head of the shift console. If you do than you'll have to open it up and check it's operational capabilities. and the connections. If you don't hear it then it could very well be a relay also. Can you remove your key alright? Because that is tied in with the lockout system.Best of luck my friend, Dana

is it a linkage issue? if the shift lever is working and you can feel the detents, check your fluid make sure it is full and clean, if not you could have internal issues with the trans

The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.

The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.

Could be the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to turn the key switch to the unlock position and shift out of park before you turn the key switch on.

How can i get it to shift to neutral


You need to post what make of vehicle this is and whether it is an Automatic or stick shift.

In general, the brake pedal must be pressed for an Automatic to be shifted away from Park. In most stick shifts, the neutral is available after pressing in on the clutch.

For Automatics requiring the pressing of the brake pedal, an interlock switch is on the brake pedal lever under the dash. The switch can be knocked out of place by feet or even broken by the drivers feet striking it.

The idea is for the gearshift and brake pedal to be "interlocked" so the brakes are applied before the gearshift can be moved. This requires the shift linkage to be adjusted or "timed" to line up for the electric signal produced by the brake pedal switch. There is also a similar system to prevent the starter from working when the gears are not in Park or neutral.

In the case of a car like a Corvette, you would push down on the stick shift before the trans will engage neutral. This was made so you would not be able to over rev the engine by missing a gear.

Automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"


There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.

HI, there is a solenoid(switch) that's located in shift linkage housing that works in conjunctions with the brake pedal when you shift from park to reverse or drive. this is a safety situation.

Sometimes, this solenoid(switch) can malfunction or die. In this case, it will prevent the gear shift lever from moving into the reverse or parked position. Simply replacing this shift lever solenoid will fix this issue. You can expose the solenoid by disassembling the shift stick housing,
