The highway for an hour or more. Is this normal or is their a problem? I have had a previous dodge caravan that did not do that.

I think if coming from the engine or transmission. It only does this when the van is on a the highway for a long leg, an hour or more. It is a humming or whinning noise.

  • enspatty Sep 08, 2009

No, not that I have notice. It only does this when the van have been on the road for a lengh of time. When coming to a stop sign, you can hear the whinning/humming noise.

No wheel bearing issues. The noise this there on long distant trips, highway. More apparent just when you come to a lower speed and exit off the highway. Could this be a belt issue? Van has only 30K miles.

Have you tried shutting AC off to see if noise goes away, or perhaps safely/carefully swerving slightly to see if it disappears momentarily one way & the other to see if possibly a wheel bearing.? Does it increase & decrease in sound as accelerating and slowing down?

Sound like it's coming from front, rear ? Does the noise change when turning at all? If you pull over, shut it off, then cycle key just to on position, do you hear a short "Hum" similar to what your hearing on highway, from rear of van?

The noise is the result of a screen at the bottom of the power steering reservoir being plugged and starving the power steering pump. The screen cannot be replaced. Replace the reservoir assembly (about $50 if DIY). Add $100 for labor if you take it in.
Don't let it go, you'll eventually damage the pump.

At this point I guess anything is possible as well as a few other things such as tires. Have you checked to make sure all tire pressures are as required, and tires are in good shape, as well as have you had tires rotated in the last while? Just booting around town or city wouldn't cause tires to heat up as much as steady highway driving where they will increase in pressure from the heat, and perhaps start running on the road differently as far as tread on surface goes. It might be smart to have tires & belts inspected. Stop at a couple of places to see if they both agree as to condition.

My 07 makes the same type of whinning noise after being on the road for a while. It sounds like the pwr steering pump of an old ford pickup I used to own. I have not felt the need to investigate any further than checking the fluid level and being annoyed by another Chrysler product.

It sounds like it needs a better ground. Pull out the stereo and run a ground wire to the body and sand around the screw or bolt so it is touching the metal and run that to your stereo.

My 2007 chrysler Sebring has a whinning noise when starts. After it starts, it sounds like knocking on the left side which is the passenger side under the hood.

I have the same problem with mine. We just took it to the dealership this morning and they said it was the alternator. Said they have been seeing alot of these. My dealership wanted to charge $800 to fix it, so now my husband is trying to replace it himself.
