Question about 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Car shuts off when stopped

I was driving my 2001 Tahoe and came to a stop sign and the car just shut off. I had to wait about 20 minutes before I could start it again to get it to my friends house. It has been running rough for the past couple of weeks and I thought that I got some bad gas so put in the supreme and it started to run better. And now this has happened.
I re-started it and went about 2 miles and it did it again. I checked the fuses and they all appear to be ok.
I had someone check under the hood and he did a test with the gas line (not sure what it is called) and when I turned the key to the on position it shot gas out.
The fuel line was disconnected from the fuel filter towards the tank. The key was then turned to the on position and no gas came out of the line? So would this in fact be my fuel pump?
If it is the fuel pump where would be the best place to buy one and about how much would it cost me?
The gas filter is relatively new, so am not sure that is it.
I would appreciate any and all help!
Thanks

If in fact the pump is running and you are not getting any fuel with the filter line disconnected and fuel in the tank, then yes, the pump is defective.
A new pump will run between $250 and $500 depending if you decide to purchase an "after market" pump or an OEM pump from the dealer. Labor to replace the pump will run you another $150 to $300 depending on who you have replace the pump and your geographical location.
No matter who replaces the pump I would suggest using a good quality replacement pump. The after market parts are cheaper to purchase but reliability is sometimes questionable.
Hope this helps, good luck.

Back the truck up boys! A OEM replacement fuel pump from O'reillys or Autozone doesn't cost anywhere near $250 and it's not a big deal to drop the tank and remove the old one and install the new one. Might take two people to be easy but I've replaced the one on my Suburban twice in 16 years and it has a 42 gallon tank. Cosider this, it's a 2001 and the OEM fuel pump failed, who says aftermarkets are un-reliabile? Seems the manufacturers parts aren't too good either. Yes you can buy CHEAP stuff but they won't garantee OEM stuff past 90 days and they charge an arm and a leg for it AND you have to have their techs put it in at shop prices.
From the sounds of it, you have some people to help you get this done so use them and save yourself some dough.

It sounds like you have a problem with the ignition coil or module(when they heat up they tend to cut off )thats because one of them is faulty, when this happens check for spark, also you dont mention if the truck ignition system is Distributorless Ignition System or distributor system. if in doubt have a service center check it out.

Not the alternator, but a fuel pump or fuel filter could be the problem. BUT it depends on the indications. A fuel starvation problem would act like it was lunging and then dieing out before it died. If it just dies out suddenly, then I would suspect an electrical problem like a coil pack or cap.

The engine stops running after 10 minutes of driving

could be a bad crank sensor, a bad crank sensor will let car run for a while then shut down and will not start for 10 to 15 min. and it will repeat this cycle if not fixed.the crankshaft position sensor provides the ignition module and pcm with a crankshaft position signal. the module uses this signal to determine spark for each cylinder. the pcm uses this signal for proper timing of engine.
