Gas Gauge Problems

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty. When I first fill up with gas it's fine. Then after about 15-20 miles there's chime, the gas guage goes to empty and the check engine light comes on. After I turn the engine off then back on, the gas gauge goes back to full but the check engine lights stays for the next 10-15 cranks. Then the check engine light goes away. After that no more problems until I fill the tank up again at which time it starts the same scenario again. What's the problem and about how much does the repair cost? Or is this something my hubby can fix? ThanksI

You will have to get the error code before the engine light goes back off. You can do this by inserting the key into the ignition, then turning the key key to the on position three times with in 5 seconds. Remember this is the on position no the start position. Once you have done this the odometer will show the error codes briefly. They will look like this "P0202, P1225, P1400. Make sure you write them down because they can go pretty quickly. Once you have the codes go to the link listed below. It will give you a brief description of what the codes mean. If you need any thing else just let me know and I'll try to help.
The first link will have jeep specific codes, the second will be codes generic to all manufacturers. Just scroll down until you see the code listings.
Good luck.

Clean your seal on gas cap good as well as the inside of filler neck where it screws into. Add a little coat of vaseline to rubber seal on cap just to help a little where it seals. Always make sure cap is put back on tight. See if that helps, if not, a new cap may be needed if seal damaged. 95% of the time, this is usually the cause.

It seems you have a problem in the sending unit wich is also conected to the vehicle computer(ecm) there may be a glitch in the circuit and therefore the check engine light goes on then off adter a while,my recomendation will be to take it to the dealer r a qualified service center and have them scan your system(the codes are stored on your ecm memory) that way you will have a more accuarte view of the problem.

ENVOY FUEL GUAGE PROBLEMS--- GAS GAUGE DOES NOT REGISTER ON FILL UP--- CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN YOU FILL UP -----THEN GOES OUT AFTER 1ST. 20 TO 40 MILES. BEN GOING ON FOR LONG TIME ONLY WORRY WHEN...

GMC sent me a letter saying that gas guage not working has been a problem and they will fix and pay half.
Also my mechanic says that it is common to get a check engine lite when you add gas to tank, especially when you fill it. Sometimes I will take off gas cap and let air out then replace cap and the check engine lite will go off. (usually). Nothing to worry about.

03 jeep liberty gas gauge is sometime at empty and some time at full

This is a common problem with all cars, If you do a search on sulfur and fuel gauge problems you would find more info than I can tell you.

But basically you will need to replace the fuel sender in the tank to fix this problem.

The sender uses silver contacts and the sulfur is corrosive to it.

The sulfer in fuel changes thru the year and sometimes its extreme.

Gas guage-oxygen sensor?

The oxygen sensor has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. There are two possibilities for the gas gauge error, first it could be the in-tank gas level sensor or it could be a defective stepper motor which drives the gauge. A professional scan tool can determine the fuel level being sent by the in-tank sensor, if that disagrees with the gauge, then the stepper motor needs replacing.

Poor gas mileage on my jeep liberty

Did this happen overnight or was it a gradual loss? Did you do any kind of repair before you lost the gas mialage? Is there a check engine light on or did it come on and go off? Did anything weird happen before the jeep got bad gas mileage? It's hard to diagnose a problem like this without actually touching the car.
Any other info might help me steer you in the right direction.

Jeep liberty gas mileage

when was the last time you put in fuel injector cleaner? I put in Lucas Oil Injector cleaner every other or every oil change.

There are alot of factors affecting your gas mileage. Tire wear, tire pressure, wheel alignment, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, oxygen sensors, just to name a few. So to say what you need is just shooting in the dark without more information. I would probably start with your oxygen sensors, and then perform a tuneup. If your vehicle pulls to one side or the other when driving on the highway you need to stop into the shop for a wheel alignment.

to increase gas mileage make sure you keep on top of tire air pressure you can also have your tires filled with nitrogen instead of air also a K&N air filter does wonders and is good for lifetime worth every penny. another smart move is to use a fuel system cleaner regularly Lucas makes great products for this try local parts store.
