Question about 2003 Chevrolet Express

2 Answers

Do you know if the 2003 Express Hi-Top Conversion Vans have had a on going problem with the rotors corroding or rusting out? I had to have the back rotors turned at 17,000 miles in 2005, and now they are completely shot and had to replace them. I am going to have to replace the front ones as well, at 67,000. This van has not been drove in the winter much at all. Thanks. Charles

Let me tell you this. The rotors now adays are not thick enough to be turned like the old days. My 2001 MonteCarlo rotors could not be turned. The guy showed me with a measureing tool that my rotors could not be resurfaced even once. A minimum thickness is cast right into the rotor so you can read it. I hope this helps you.

It isn't that they are rusting out. All newer vehicles have rotors made of cheaper metal and this causes them to warp. A rotor can only be turned down once or twice before it is too thin and needs replaced. Next time you need rotors, buy a better name brand rotor. It is worth the extra money to solve this problem. Hope this helps...

I inherited a G20 gladiator chevy van and cannot figure out how to get the spare tire cover off the back door??? It sounds stupid, I know.

Most likely Gladiator conversion vans disappeared like many of the other conversion van companies. I am not familiar with Gladiator vans, but most of the conversion vans use the same setup. The chrome ring around tire is latched near the bottom, and usually padlocked to keep others from stealing your spare. If that is not the case, try http://www.v-sales.com/repair.htm . They still sell conversion parts and may be able to help you. Hope this helps

I took the caliper off on the rear wheels and I am trying to get the rotors off. I am hitting the rotors but they are not coming off. I don't know if they are held by a bolt or just rusted on. It is a Ford...

I had the same problem with the fronts on my 2003 expedition. Assuming you took all the bolts/clips off that could be holding it then I think you have a rusted on problem that even wd40 wont help. Here is a link on how I removed my fronts 5 years ago when the truck was only a year old and the rotors were deeply scarred with the pads that ford first used back then that made the wheels get dirty from brake dust, look for orlandoguy in the postings. basically you use a circular saw with a metal cutting blade to put a weak spot the on the rotor by cutting a slot in the rotor and use a cold chisel and small 5 lb hammer to split it after, Once you crack the rotor you break the rust bond on the hub and it slides off. I wirebrushed the hubs after and used wheel bearing grease to put a thin film on that mating surface to make the next rotor replacement easier.
