A/c blower runs only on high...all other a/c functions seem to operate properly. fan speed control on the dash AND THE FAN SPEED CONTROl ON THE STEERING WHEEL BOTH HAVE NO EFFECT...

I will not guess. what is wrong, nor what is not working on your car. now what fans you are talking about, up to 4 fans on cars.

cab blower fan (wild guess blower is ok) and so is HVAC, ?

on modern cars, they got smarter, the engine goes
gee the PCM knows water temp why have a fan temp regulator.
hark , now it dont. (saves cash on useless parts)
but has a relay , (well until you have my car and the relay is now 100% electronic, called a huge transistor)
we've used this tech in industry for years, but car makers just learning how still.
i digress. but evolution and history helps diagnosis.

"The engine cooling fan system consists of 2 electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the engine control module (ECM) to operate both fans together at low or high speeds. The cooling fans receive positive voltage from the cooling fan relays which receive battery positive voltage from the underhood fuse block.
During low speed operation, the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed cooling fan relay which is fan 1 relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the low speed fan relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and supplies battery positive voltage from the fan 1 fuse through the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the left cooling fan. The ground path for the left cooling fan is through the series/parallel relay which is fan 2 relay, and the right cooling fan. The result is a series circuit with both fans running at low speed.
During high speed operation the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed fan relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. The ECM grounds the high speed fan relay, which is fan 3 relay, and the series/parallel relay, which is fan 2 relay through the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the series/parallel relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and provides a ground path for the left cooling fan. At the same time the high speed fan relay coil is energized closing the relay contacts and provides battery positive voltage from the fan 2 fuse 1 on the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the right cooling fan. During high speed fan operation, both engine cooling fans have their own ground path. The result is a parallel circuit with both fans running at high speed.
When the request for fan activation is withdrawn, the fan may not turn OFF until the ignition switch is moved to the OFF position or the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 16 km/h (10 mph). This is to prevent a fan from cycling ON and OFF excessively at idle.

is the ECT showing overheat, yes no?
if yes, it must operate a fan or 2.
the book even covers all tests for fans dead, in a large truth table.
both the FSM and alldata.com have that, its no secret ,its published in 4 major places.

lets back up
if the engine coolant is low (no that side tank the engine and rad)
the ECT will lie. if that happens the fans may not come one
that is because the ECT is useless measuring air, for water.
that water must touch ECT for ECT to work.
this is FIRST
then scan the ECT does it show overheating, IT must if it IS overheating. fix that next if it lies to you,(IR gun in hand)

The system has staged fans.
i cant find the trip points in my crappyy online pages.
but is like 225f then 250f trips. is my guess...
about. if the engine over heats, check fuses first then scan it.
it will simply tell you why its bad.
eg, fan1 output dead.
or if you hot wire a fan and its dead, then it is.
(only on cars with non modulated fans,,hot wire them,else not.)

this is how it really works
the ECU has software that decide trip points for fans.
hard coded, this is. based on how hot it is and if A/C is on not.
its way smarter than 1988 and better.
the DTC errors can see an open line, shorted to ground or stuck 12v.(runs all time error)
(tells you relay is good or not)

Heater / air conditioner fan control doesn't engage fan. Previously, it only worked in high speed.


I would replace the blower motor resistor first then see if that corrects this. The resistor is located next to the blower motor under the dash.

I have 91 Toyota camry & just recently my fan blower on works on high, the medium and low functions don't work. Is there something wrong with my fan blower?


No.

Probably not. If it runs on high, it is probably good.
Unless is sounds slow or 'tight' on high, or squeaks or chips , etc. Run the fan with the engine off and then shut the fan off and listen and see if you can hear how long it takes to slow down. If it stops in just a second or two, the bearings are tight (dry). If it spins down normally, maybe three to eight seconds or more, the motor is fine. You really don't need this check.

It is most likely your blower relay.
Most cars have one or two relays to control the fan motor, which is a single speed motor that the relays and speed switch and blower resistor control the power to.

One relay is for high speed, also switch contact.
One relay is for other speeds and divert current through a blower resistor located by the fan duct under the dash or under the hiid by the fan.
Also the switch contacts for each speed.

It cad be the dash switch, which has to handle the blower resistor current for all the lower speeds is burned out at those speeds.
It can be the low speed blower relay, as I mention above, is burned out, this is most frequent cause.
it can be the blower resistor is burned out, this can give no low speeds, or loose speeds below a certain speed setting.

Try you manual for the blower relays' positions. Try swapping with the horn relay to test if it is the same type of relay.
Take out the blower resistor carefully (pretend you are defusing a bomb or playing "operation" game as it has exposed coils that are delicate and if you bump the sides of the opening as you extract it you will damage it and short the coils against each other). the wire coils are very fine bare wire coils that look like springs and if touching can burn out.
Switch is harder to test because hard to get at, check the other things first.
You should be able to test for voltages at the resistor plug to see if power is coming from the switch, but wiring schemes can vary.
Post back or use shop manual to troubleshoot the switch.

There are two types of blower fan speed control. One uses a rheostat, and the other one uses electronic circuits. The speed control is atually located on the blower fan housing. It is fastened with two screws. The rheostat kind uses nicrhome wires(same wire used for heating element such as a toaster etc. The more wire wound around the mica material( anyways a mica is a heatproof material), the greater the resistance and therefore the slowe the motor will turn. The electronic kind uses a transistor, and works very much like the speed control on a cordless power drill. The transistor gets pulse from another electronic device and this pulse is modulated by the control knob in your dash. When this transistor gets messed up it gets shorted. This results in having high speed at all settings. The rheostat kind mess up when the nichrome wire gets burnt out and you end up with may a fan that works only on high, or maybe wroks only on medium and high vice versa. So the problem is the speed control mounted on your blower fan housing. If you want to know how to test them let me knw I will show you.

hey there cjwalker,,did you try the blower ressistor its located beside the heatermotor ,,it controlls the speed of the motor ..should be easy to remove ,,,either 2 screws or else it just clips in,,,,,

check blower motor resister in plenum housing if this is manual system.
If electronic, check blower motor speed controller.

Blower fan runs high only on 2006 Ford Explorer


if you have manual control climate control then the system has a blower motor resistor . if you have automatic climate control then the system has a blower motor speed control. in eather case the part is under the dash in the heater box. depending on the system you have, buy the part and then look under the dash for like part, you will half to remove the under dash panels to be able to see. the part will be on the heater box somewhare.

Ac controls quit working blower fan is running on high all thetime. compressor is not working.


fan elays are under hood in black box by battery. 3 of them. 2 for high speed, 1 for low speed. Default is high speed when there is a probem.

Suspect maybe they shorted something out when fixing dent. Did they do any welding on the van? Connecting the cables to the body can sometimes send voltage where it's not wanted.
