How to remove broken bracket holding up alternator.

I've removed three bolts holding on the bracket, but can't seem to see how to finish the job of getting the thing off the engine block.

Have you taken off the pivot bolt or bolts at the bottom of the alternator? It might be a long single bolt or two short bolts where it attaches at the block.

It's a little tricky.
I recently had to replace mine, it was still under warranty.

You don't have to removed any of the motor mounts.
A quick review of the process.

Release the pressure on the belt tensioner and remove
The belt around the alternator.
On the top left corner of the alternator you'll see a 10mm
Bolt bracket holding the alternator wires. Remove that 10mm bolt.
Then the alternator connector and power wire. A 12mm nut.
Then to remove the alternator you must remove the bracket which holds the alternator,
Which is the tricky part. The alternator has 2 14mm bolts holding it to the bracket, the bracket has 4 14mm bolts and
A 12mm bolt on the front. Two of the 14mm bolts are located behind the alternator.
Which means you would have to move the alternator toward the front of the car to reach the two bolts.
Then remove the bracket and alternator together. Then you would have to follow in reverse order to properly reach
Those 2 14mm behind the alternator.

It's going to seem like impossible especially your first time.
The Hyundai instruction just shows to remove the belt, under covers and the alternator. Literally.
I don't know where your located but I'm in Miami. If that's any help, we can do it together no issues.

About alternator replacement for 2001 vw beetle gls...I've removed the upper and lower bolts... What am I missing? Alternator still won't budge. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

all the bolts removed then all thats holding it is the adjustable tube in on the lower fitting ,put a bar in and try moving it then it will move as on the lower fitting with the long bolt is a tube in the alternator housing bracket and this is pulled or pushed out to make contact with the support bracket .Check you havent got three bolts holding it as some vehicles have two bolts on the bottom bracket or one long one

Is fixing the ultinator yourself an easy job

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. If necessary, remove any splash shielding for easier access to the alternator.

  1. Tag and disengage the alternator wiring.

It may be necessary to remove the alternator and mounting bracket from the vehicle as an assembly.

  1. If equipped, remove the front alternator assembly mounting plate.

Remove the six nuts and bolts that secure the front mounting plate to the alternator assembly

  2. If installing the original alternator assembly, push out the pivot bushing as illustrated.

If re-installing, the alternator has a pivot bushing on the pivot arm that should be pushed out before installation

Mount a C-clamp and 18mm socket on the alternator pivot bushing ...

... then compress the C-clamp until it pushes the alternator pivot bushing out

To install:

  1. Mount the alternator to the brackets with the nuts and bolts. Tighten the two mounting bolts and nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  2. If the alternator and mounting bracket were removed as an assembly, install the assembly into the vehicle.
  3. If removed, install the front mounting plate.
  4. Engage the alternator electrical connections.
  5. If removed, install the splash shield.
  6. install the drive belt and attach the negative battery cable.

How do you install the alternator

1990-93 Accord
  1. With the ignition OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Section 8 for the complete procedure.
  3. Remove the cruise control actuator but do not disconnect the actuator cable; simply move the unit out of the way with the cable attached.
  4. Unplug the multi-pin electrical connector.
  5. Remove the terminal nut and remove the wire from the terminal.
  6. Loosen the adjusting bolt; remove the alternator nut. Fig. 3: Alternator mounting on 1990-93 Accords 86803003.gif

  7. Remove the belt from the alternator pulley.
  8. Remove the adjusting bolt, the lower through-bolt and the small support stay.
  9. Support the alternator. Remove the upper through-bolt and remove the alternator.
  10. If desired, remove the alternator mounting brackets. To install:
  11. If the alternator brackets were removed, reinstall them. Coat the bolts with a thread sealer or liquid thread lock. Install the bracket bolts and tighten them to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12. Fit the alternator into place. Install the upper through-bolt and tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  13. Install the small stay, the lower through-bolt and the adjusting bolt. Make certain the adjusting bolt is properly installed.
  14. Install the belt. Install the alternator nut. Adjust the belt tension. Tighten the alternator nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  15. Connect the wire to the terminal and tighten the nut.
  16. Engage the multi-pin connector to the alternator.
  17. Install the cruise control actuator.
  18. Install the power steering pump.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.

I would like instructions to remove and replace the alternator in a 2004 FORD EXPLORER XLS with a 4.0L V6

Disconnect the battery

Remove the air snorkel and upper half of the air box. You may have to remove the engine cover to get at the clamp for the air snorkel at the throttle body.

You will see the serp belt tensioner on the drivers side of the engine. In the center of the pulley will be a bolt head. use the appropriate sized socket and ratchet to rotate the tensioner using the bolt head. Once the tension is off the belt it can be removed from the alternator pulley. You do not need to remove the entire belt.

Remove the three bolts holding the alternator to the bracket. A 15mm socket and possible a swivel should to the trick.

Remove the plug in connector from the alternator and remove the nut holding the battery cable to the backside of the alternator.

Make sure the new alternator is the same amperage, has the same mounting brackets and the same pulley size and the same number of groove. Essentially make sure it looks identical to the old one.

Then reinstall. It should take you about an hour tops. Good luck!

How do you take the alternator off for a 96 plymouth neon

For REMOVAL & INSTALLATION check this procedure...
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  1. Loosen, but do not remove the alternator adjusting nut.
  1. Turn the front wheels completely to the right, then raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the plastic lower splash shield.
  1. Unfasten the alternator field circuit wiring connector. You must squeeze the locking tab to release it.
  1. Remove the B+ terminal nut and wire.
  1. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt, but do not remove it.
  1. Remove the alternator drive belt. The alternator spill shield does not have to be removed.
  1. If necessary, remove the bottom pivot bolt and anti-rotation tab.
  1. Unfasten the three mounting pivot bracket bolts, then remove the pivot bolt and bracket.
  2. Holding the alternator in one hand, remove the adjustment nut then slide the alternator off the T-bolt. The T-bolt does not have to be removed. Lower the alternator and remove through the wheel well.
To install:
  1. You may need to use a C-clamp to drive the sleeve into the mounting ear for installation clearance.
  2. Position the alternator in the vehicle, sliding it onto the T-bolt. Install the adjusting nut.
  3. Install the bracket and pivot bolt, then install the three mounting pivot bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4. If removed, install the anti-rotation tab and bottom pivot bolt hand-tight.
  5. Install the alternator drive belt.
  6. Tighten the alternator pivot bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  7. Install the B+ terminal wire and nut. Tighten the nut to 75 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  8. Attach the alternator field circuit wiring connector, making sure the locking tabs are engaged.
  9. Install the splash shield, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  10. Tighten the adjusting nut.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Adjust the alternator belt.

Pulling an alternator

Removing the rear-mounted alternator on early 1990s Civics and CRX can be frustrating. After removing the upper adjusting bracket bolt and the lower pivot bolt, the alternator can *almost* come out the top and almost fits behind the intake manifold.

The only easy exit path is out the left wheel well. Side access requires removing the wheel and unfastening three of the plastic retainers holding the upper end of the splash guard. But even this doesn't provide quite enough room. You need to tuck the alternator back under the intake, unbolt the lower alternator bracket (two bolts, 14mm socket) before the alternator can be removed.

The tools needed:

10mm socket -- alternator power connection, battery terminal
12mm wrench -- adjusting bracket
14mm socket -- adjusting bracket, pivot bolt, alternator bracket

Directions on how to remove the alternator on 1989 900 Saab. Does anything have to be removed to be able to get the alternator off. Also, any tricks to get belts off first?

Removing the alternator isn't the easiest job on this car!

The long bolt that allows the alternator to pivot to adjust belt tension ISN'T the bolt to be removed; remove the two bolts that hold the mounting bracket to the engine block. One is at the end of the alternator (away from the belt), the other is above the end of the adjusting bolt, not far away from the first bolt. Slacken the tension off the belt by loosening the adjusting bolt, then undo the two bolts holding the bracket to the engine block.

While you have the alternator off, check the bushings of the tension adjusting bolt; if worn/sloppy they should be pressed out and replaced; it'll extend the life of the alternator bearings.

If it is Right next to the Alternator, You may need to remove the Alternator Bracket to get this Removed. It should Remove Easy and not be a Big Job. Look Closer, There is another Bolt there Somewhere. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!
