Question about 1986 Pontiac Bonneville

I have replace the spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor on my car. Once i did that when i accelerate it hesitstates and back fires

You have the spark plug wires in the right place if not that probably is the problem.

It is hoped you have replaced the wires that go from your distributor cap to each of your spark plugs AND that the gap on your plugs are set correctly.. Secondly, if you replaced your rotor head, and it is not sparking, it is very possible your rotor isn't making the connection inside the dist. cap.

the only way to verify this is to get your old rotor and put it back on. If it fires, you know your replacement part isn't configured properly.

my guess, is you did NOT replace the wires 1by1.
and messed up the firing order. (engine size not posted)
or
you bought one of this china,no-name POS rotors that fit 3 ways?
or the cap is on backwards
or the wire terms(HV) not seated.

ill assume the dizzy was never unbolted.

never power wash an engine, you force water to places that never must be...
let it dry for a day or 2.

what does FIRE to plugs mean.
i used a grounded tests spark plug , at the end of each spark plug
and there is no spark.

i ask that, because some posters say that , but only mean
the cylinders are dead, and call it no fire.
takes spark, compression and injection and timing to fire.

not knowing the condition of you suv, replace fuel & air filters, very important, replace distributor cap & rotor, spark plugs & plug wires. that should do it, good luck

Could be a damaged cap or rotor, or a lean fuel mixture.
You could try running the engine with the choke partially on to rule out the lean fuel mixture theory. It could have a faulty accelerator pump in the carb, or dirt in the carb.
A cracked cap could cause the rotor to fire the wrong plugs under load.

yes it could,, if you don't have the correct spark,, the firing would be weaker also, check the wires themselves to the plugs, and also the rotor , just because the cap looks brand new doesn't mean that its not arching inside the cap,, allowing the contact to get a reduced spark, if you replaced the coil, then its after that in the electrical circuit,, which brings you back to the cap, rotor, and wires. normally 3 wires won't go bad all at once unless there is a heat problem where the wires are routed, so I would just replace the cap and rotor, and see how it runs after that .

Will not accelerate fast without popping and sputtering, but will accelerated slow just fine


you have a miss fire under load the most common cause is a bad spak plug wire, if you give it a good old tune up it should take care of the problem.

spark plugs, spark plug wires, distabutor cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and PCV valve.....good luck

I just changed all spark plugs and wires with boash platium +4 spark plugs and boash wires. the problem i'm having it's only firing on 5 not 6, i checked all wires and there in the right places. I have...


1. Double check the connections at BOTH ends of the wires- at the distributor and at the plug. 2. Make sure each spark plug boot has proper connection. 3. Double check the plugs to make sure that they are all gapped correctly and no contamination. 4. Hold each spark plug upright and make sure that the ceramic insulator near the tip isn't loose and sliding down and possibly covering the metal tip..(had this happen more than once) 5. Check for spark at each plug (be careful) 6. Open the distributor cap and double check all the exposed metal connectors are clean. 7. buy one extra plug and change out the suspect plug.
