Common problem..we keep ours in drive..4th when traveling in hilly areas because tranny keeps shifting into overdrive...5th. I know they should not shift like this but if you try that it will solve your shifting problem without spending hard earned dollars. :) hope that helps.

I have a 91 toyota celica that will not go when put into gear.

Have you had problems with clutch slipping up to this point? Like engine revving up and no change in speed while driving. Like going into 4th or 5th gear, letting clutch out, giving gas, and feels like no response? Engine just revs up? That's a slipping clutch.
If that's your problem, you need a new clutch.

My 1995 sentra shifts fine in all gears but when i accelerate in 4th or 5th gear it the rpms wind up and the car doednt real respond feels like its in the accelerater do i need a new clutch

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. If the clutch is bad, it will slip in high gears (4th & 5th) but seem to work fine in lower gears. Clutch probably needs replaced but have a mechanic check it out first because it's a fairly expensive job. If your clutch is actuated via a cable (not hydraulic), it may just need adjusting.

I have a 2001 Lincoln LS, when I put the gear into Drive, later while driving the D changes to an E. What does that mean?

There is a spring damaged in the valve body, these are known for causing loss of 4th and 5th gear and an E where the shift indicator is read on the dash. The spring is the 3-4 prestroke spring, and an updated one is made by Sonnax and available through Fatsco in NJ, look them up on the web.
It is a 6 dollar part but does require some serious time to reinstall, and is not really a DIY job unless you have a lot of patience (the entire bottom control section/valve body needs to be removed from the car and serviced on a bench) and an inch-lb torque wrench. galaxiejeff@embarqmail.com

Change the gearbox oil. Gearchange actuators may be gumming up - a change can work miracles.
