I have a Late 1999 Chevy Silverado C1500 Z71. I had one of the heater
hose nozzle snap off this past weekend. I looks like the heater core
hase some kind connection fitting. And I had the same situation!
Inspect/Replace
If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired. Heater Housing
The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core.
Heater Core
Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
Remove the heater coolant hoses.
Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.
The heater hose connects to the heater core through the fire wall, under the hood, remove heater hose clamp at fire wall under the hood, remove clamp at other end, install new heater hose, no you don't have to do any thing under the dash.
Not a whole lot different. Just need to keep removing plastic down at the heater until you get to the heater core. Then disconnect it on the firewall side.
It's been a while since I've done one of those. If my memory serves correct you have to remove the lower right bolt that holds the dash in place. Then you can pull the dash out enough to get the core out. If you can see it you have to be almost there. Do you have the glove compartment out? It seems to me there are some electrical components that sit on top of heater that have to be removed too. Hoses disconnected under the hood? I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
As with all vehicles it seems the first part that they build around is the heater core. It is under the dash above the floor housed in a black plastic sealed box. Sealed with goop. Locate that box and start removing everything around it that is peventing taking the cover off. Of course disconnect the heater hoses under the hood a thefirewall.
I just replaced the heater core on my 1997 S-10. If your chevy is anything like mine, the entire dash has to come out. I recommend buying a Hayne's manual for it. Those books are life savers.
Start by draining the coolant, disconnect dash board wiring harness from pcm behind kick panels, disconnect eye shaft, unbolt dashboard and remove dash. (Remember to tape steering wheel in place as it might have a clock spring). You might have to remove some trim panel on top of dash or cluster from dashboard to gain access to retaing bolts, disconnect heater hoses from heater core in engine compartment and remove heater core, reverse install.
