There is access to the fuel pump under the back seat of our 2000 Ford contour. Is it possible to get the pump out through the hole or does the tank still have to be dropped?

If you look at new pumps, they are all ones that sit inside the gas tank. There should be an access plate over the pump, under the carpet. Locate this access plate and remove it to access the pump. See if there is a low point in the gas tank from under the vehicle, that's probably where the pump access plate is located inside.

It's under the right side rear door unscrew the clamp and use fuel line separators to get the front line off push in and pull out the line on the back there's a clip you push out

False....pull the back seat and remove the large rubber grommet that covers the access hole. The pump will not fit thru the hole but a little "persuading" around the hole with some vise grips will allow the pump to come out. Kind of hackish but the metal is simple to bend back into place once you are done. Don't forget to disconnect your battery before you do any work on your fuel system.

The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. Unless there is an access panel in the trunk or under the back seat, you will have to remove the fuel tank to access the pump.

check your fuel pump. have some lay on the ground by the fuel tank. Turn the key on but dont try to start. There will be a 1-2 sec. hum from the fuel tank. If nothing is heard then the pump is bad. the only way to change the pump isto remove the gas tank.

remove the tank,try fuel filter first,it should be under passenger side in front of rear tire

My guess would be dirty fuel tank. Possibly clogged fuel pump strainer.
