SOURCE: mercury sable 2002 serpentine belt change

There are also two serpentine belt types for the 2002 sable. The S and U type engine. Take the old belt with you the the parts store. As for the diagram, I googled it under images and about a dozen correct ones came up. Remember the 2002 sable is the same as the 2002 Tarus.

How to replace a serpentine belt tensioner on a 1995 mercury sable 3.8

Hello. Using a 15 mm socket or wrench on bolt attaching drive belt tensioner pulley, rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise. Make sure spring keeper engages into slot. I would put a socket on the 15 mm pulley bolt and a long handle for leverage. Here is the link to the diagram you need:

Step by step on how to replace the alternator on a mercury sable 3.0L?

Hi:
The simple version is this:

Disconnect the negative battery terminal
Make a diagram of the routing of your serpentine belt if there isn't a picture under the hood.
Locate the spring loaded tensioner pulley , and using a breaker bar or large ratchet, rotate it to take the tension off of the serpentine belt, then slip the belt loose off of the tensioner. disconnect the electrical connectors off of the alternator. Unbolt the alternator in two places.
To install, reverse the process

Make sure your battery is fully charged before starting the car.

My belt is still loose after i changed out the

You will need an alternative wrench. The alternator wrench will grab the alternator for you and allow you to move the alternator to make the belt extremely tight. However, depending on which engine you have, you may have a serpentine belt which is tightened automatically with an tension wheel. If this is the case you have the wrong size belt and need to obtain the correct, smaller belt.

Serpentine belt

The 3.0 engine is equipped with an auto tensioner (spring loaded).
If your experiencing a noise concern it could be the belt needs replacement or a pulley could be mis-aligned.

I haven't looked at my wife's sable, but it should probably have a nut on the pulley (tensioner) that you could turn left or right and get your belt back on.
