The check engine light should be on--rent a scanner, read out the code(s), and follow the clues to repairs. Don't leave the car in an enclosed space (garage) while you can smell fuel. Depending on how hot the engine became, you may have warped cylinder head(s) which leads to a number of problems. That possibility plus whatever other defects are uncovered, should lead you to examine the value of the car to you and the probable expense of several thousand dollars to totally repair all of the problems by a mechanic. If you are capable of removing and replacing the head(s) yourself, you can save a major labor expense. A replacement engine from a wrecking yard may be a cheaper option.

Depending on how bad it overheated, the timing belt may be broken or if it overheated to the point that the car shut off while running you may have serious engine damage.

Acts like its running out of gas then completely shuts off and wont start back till you let it cool down is it a wiring problem

Hi,

It is probably electrical because it goes away when it cools down. First you should diagnose if it is a fuel or ignition fault. When the car is dead, see if you are getting fuel and spark to the cylinders: remove a spark plug, but leave it on the wire and rest the plug threads on a metal part on the engine, and have someone crank the engine - look for a spark. Do not hold the spark plug or you can get a shock.

If you are getting no spark, the problem is the ignition control module which is located under the distributor cap - the round plastic piece from which the spark plug wires run.

With the plug out, you can also smell the spark plug hole. There should be a fuel smell. If not, suspect the fuel pump relay.

2004 gmc jimmy, tried to start fired twice didnt catch now just turns over,i can here fuel pump and smell gas.replaced ignition coil??? still wont fire

Check the ECM/BAT fuse. this fuse controls the ECM and the fuel injection circuit. If the fuse is ok, you need to check for voltage at the spark plug. Pull the #1 spark plug. If the cylinder is getting fuel the plug will be wet with gasoline. Put the spark plug wire back on the plug. Now crank the starter and look for a spark from the spark plug electrode. If you can let me know what you find from these tests, I can help you determine the next course of action.

Overheated now it wont start

You need to do a compression test on it to see if the engine was damaged internally during the overheating. This will let you know right away if there is any internal damage. From there if the compression test is good you need to check for fuel pressure, and spark at the spark plugs. Normally engines will restart after overheating, that is why I suspect possible internal damage. Good luck with it.

Turns over but wont start

first check fuel, then check to see if it is fireing at the spark plug. if it is fireing at plug, check to make sure it is getting fuel. ( should be able to smell fuel on the electrode end of spark pug). If it is getting fuel, and spark, you may try removeing all spark plugs, then shoot some oil into each spark plug hole. Replace plugs, and try to start. If it still wont try to start, may be out of time. Does it pop, backfire when you are cranking the engine?

Hi even if you had a mayor tune up you still have to do mantenance to your car , be sure you check your fuel filter, you can also add a good fuel injection cleaner to the sistem ,it wont hurt, leave the car runing for some twenty minutes afther you add the cleaner ,also check your oil levels ,(motor & transmition ,checkthe spark plug wires and also if you know how check the spark plugs .GOOD LUCK......
