My pontiac aztek '01 doesn't always want to start. Have to tap gas to get it to start. Sometimes it idles really low...other times it idles high and acts as if I'm giving it gas when I'm not. Any ideas?

The computer controls idle through the idle control valve or motor. Sometimes deposits build up around it or in the air passages it controls. If it is taken off and cleaned, it might help. Use a good quality sensor safe cleaner. Check if the passages are clear.
Or if the throttle position sensor is going bad, it could cause those problems. The sensor can be tested with a multi-meter.
Have you checked for any trouble codes?

On the throttle body you will find the IAC idle control valve, with two wires going to it, unplug and plug it back if no change then bang on the IAC if it goes to normal idle change one with used one and should be fine.

The car will not hold rpm.

If you check engine light is on the computer has a code to show what sensor is having issues or perhaps is broken.

If you can keep the car running by staying on the gas pedal its most likely a broken throttle position sensor or a broken idle air control.

Throttle position sensors *(TPS for short) are high wear since they are mechanically changing position everytime you move the gas pedal. The idle air control is less likely but still a possiblity.

Find an autoparts store that will read your on board diagnostic code *(called OBD 2 for short) for free and see if the code is something that just requires a new part.

TPS for a Nissan Maxima is 130-150 bucks! So doing this cheap is not going to be easy! The idle air control is over 200 bucks! Yipes!

Good luck with your repair and be careful!

When i put my car in drive and let off the brake the car will take off without me even pushing the gas pedal. it will go from first to second with no foot on the gas.

you probably have a intake manifold gasket leak,,this casues a vacum leak at number 1 cylinder between the intake manifold and the cylinder head the gasket collapses and leaks air this sucking more air into the engine a giving it a high idle like 1200 rpms or more sometimes and this will cause you issue,,,its a typicial issue for the SL1 abd SC1,,,gaskets about $12 at autozone about $40 at dealer and about 5 hours labor to change it,,but thats your issue,,,eventualy it will set a high idle code with the ses light

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too

95 cadillac eldorado engine stalls rough idle check engine light is on

I have a 1994 Cadillac Eldorado and every time i start it the car has rough Idle and the Idle fluctuate's. I also can feel it in the gas pedal when the car is doing this I tried replacing the throttle body sensor but it still does it I also was told it was the Idle error sensor. So instead of spending the unecessary money again I thought I would go online and see if anyone could help me with this problem.
