Question about 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

Open Question

Idle at 1000-1200 rpm also sometimes 1500-1700 rpm

I have same problem as other 04 grand am with sparatic high idle problem i have removed idle air control valve when car was having problem the plunger was 1/16 of an inch difference out of the hole wich would let more air go by but i am not sure if that much is enough tomake 500 rpm difference because at normal idle plunger measures 1/16 into hole more if you were to replace idle positoining senser does it not have to set a certain way maybe by mechanic

My 1993 jeep grand cherokee laredo idles rough after warm up. it also idels high around 2000 rpm at start up sometimes and needs to be shut off and restarted to calm idle speed. whats is causing the...

usually rough Idle is not noticable at high ildle. Once it is idles normally try Disconnecting one injector at a time. If the idle stays the same than that cylinder is the culprit. Remove that spark. If it is wet than do a compression test. Should read better than 100lbs of compression. If compression is good take a spark plug and hook it into the end of the plug wire.Lay it across the intake, start the car and watch for spark. If you have spark than you probably have a bad injector. A miss will cause the vehicle to idle high. The computer is trying to keep the car from dieing out. Hope this helps. No spark do a tune up.

Engine idles high...in excess of 1200 rpm...replaced the inlet air control valve...did not fix the problem...any other ideas? vacuum line problem?

Have you had the idle sensor checked? I had a 92 Grand Am that was doing the same thing. The mechanic checked it (after the wreck) and turns out that was causing the engine to idle high.

check or clean out throttle body at throttle plate it may have carbon build up on it. also make sure air filter is clean and check or replace the intake air tempurature sensor.(iat) sensor. the sensor is under 20.00, the sensor is after air filter in the big hose to throttle body.

High idle car lunges forward

If you have a high idle and lunging...that usually happens when there is a leak on the intake manifold side allowing more air to get in, then the computer senses the increase in air and adds more fuel. There in turn has to be one more failure in the system to allow the idle to run away, may be a tps sensor (throttle position sensor) or something down the line.
