If you see coolant leaking from the pump why not change the pump? Also, after a bad overheat like you had, you MUST change the engine oil and the transmission oil or you are asking for problems down the road as both lubricants do not do well in high heat conditions and loose their ability to do their job.

There are only two way that water can leak from a water pump the first is a cracked or split hose. The second if past the pump shaft seal. If you see it coming out from behind the pulley then it's the shaft and that mean the water pump needs replacing.I cannot state this strongly enough.DO NOT DRIVE IT IN AN OVERHEATED CONDITION. I hate to see anyone have to go through the expense that can come from it as opposed to the relatively small amount for a new water pump. I am not sure what engine you have but if it's the one I'm thinking of it has aluminum heads. They are very sensitive to overheating. This will cause them to warp which mean removing the heads, having them milled, a valve job and new top end gasket set. The knocking you heard could have been caused by pre-detonation due to the higher then normal engine temp. As long as you don't see any milky coloring in your oil or white sweet smelling smoke from your exhaust you should still be alright. But unless you can trace that leak to a damaged hose you should take care of the water pump.
A good way to double check for a bad pump is to grab a hold of the water pump pulley and try to move it. If you feel any play in it at all it's bad.
Good luck!

IF THIS IS AN LT1 V8 ENGINE THE OPTI SPARK DISTRIBUTOR IS MOUNTED RIGHT BELOW THE WATER PUMP AND IF ANTIFREEZE GETS IN THIS UNIT IT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS PROBLEM YOU EXPERIENCED.

My 2004 Pontiac sunfire engine is making a knocking noise what could it be

Internal damage to the engine. Usually a knocking is a loose piston rod that connects to the crankshaft. When the rod bearing gets too worn, it causes the rod to become loose around the crankshaft, and you get that horrible knocking noise or rattle. The engine has to be rebuilt (very expensive) or a replacement engine must be found.
If the knocking is loud, and not a ticking (valves or valve lifters), then it won't be long before the engine is destroyed. Too much pressure on the loose rod-soon it may come apart and blow a hole in your block from the rod disintegrating. Not a pretty sight!

Car started knocking really bad got a cylinder 2 misfire code after opening coolant bleed valve with enging hot

Okay, it may be due to overheating, that may be the noise you heard, lets hope. first allow engine to cool, open radiator cap or the resivoir cap, which ever is the fill, remove the bleeder at top hose and fill radiator slowly until coolant comes out bleeder.

note if water pump was replaced due to leaking and engine was overheated at that time then it may be a good idea to replace the thermostat .
after filling is done start engine and allow it to run. watch temperature if temp start to climb past half way shut engine down and let sit for 5min. then restart and check level, in res do not open cap . feel air from fan and see if it is getting hot, this may take up to a half hour but do not drive,

A few questions, does this jeep have an electric fan?
when you heard the knocking was engine temp hot?
If you start jeep cold does engine knock?
Did this jeep get a new thermostat with waterpump job?
did it overheat when pump went bad and why did water pump get replaced?

sorry for all the questions ,just trying to get all the info to help you .

Ticking noise from under my hood

ticking noise can be a lifter /push rod /or rocker that needs adjusting or has been damaged from overheating [oil turns to sludge and can block oil passages in upper valve train ]or damaged from being out of time bent pushrod, flattened -collapsed lifter

did you have the heads worked at a machine shop (pressure tested, valves seals replaced and ground , and milled )? also how many mies are on the engine? the ticking noise very well could be timing chain noise. as for the overheating did you check the water pump to make sure your getting proper circulation. you can test it by removing one heater hose from the intake then start the engine. if the pump is good then water should spray out of the hose if the pump is weak then the water may trickle out.

think your confusing a pinking or pre detonation of the fuel and hydraulic tappet or lifter ,a water pump bearing will whine ands start leaking as the water has gone through the seal into the bearing andf start leaking .Check the timing as it should ba about 6? BTDC static or with timing light on idle ,Now as for the valve lifter or tappets in my terminology then its a case of have a look and give a visual inspection as it could have a worn tappet causing the noist as sometimes the case hardening wears through and then it wears away so quick causing your noise

might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-0.jpg 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-2.jpg

2001 FORD FOCUS LOAD TICKING NOISE

it very well can be that depending on the severity of the ticking noise, if it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, place your hand on it only when you first start it up and if you can feel it knocking slightly and if the noise dies away once warmed up id say its your lifter, if its a heavier knocking rather than a ticking and comes from below or bottom end of engine it may be big end bearing, not good. try putting some engine treatment through the engine oil and make sure you run it in as directions state then change the oil and filter and see if that helps :)
