Open Question

Car won't crank after water pump install.

I just changed my water pump and now my car won't start or crank. The TDC was set properly but the lower mark was not aligned. How can I get them in sync so the car starts?

    I have a couple of questions Frist did you lock the injection pump before taking of the t-belt? Did you set the timming marks before pulling the timming belt?

Hi, if you have been talking to somebody, if you reply on the comment link, they will know your asking another question. As far as firing order, whatever cylinder would have to be on compression stroke.
I don't know year--make--model?

They have to be dead on. it sounds to me that its putting in fuel after the spark.which also makes me think timing. Putting the belt on counterclockwise is important too.

Maybe have someone crank it with a plug out and see if the plug sparks when the piston is right past TDC. Unplug the fuel injector or unscrew it and hang it in an empty bottle to make sure its spraying fuel at the right time.

One of those is out of sync from what youre describing.

If you are re-installing the distributor, the only limit on where the vacuum advance goes is whether you have room to rotate the distributor to the proper timing position. The really critical part is arranging it so the rotor is on the number 1 cylinder when the number 1 piston is top dead center (TDC) in the firing position. To do this, rotate the crankshaft so the timing mark on the harmonic balancer lines up with the timing mark gauge mounted on the block. Set the rotor to the number one spark plug position and install the distributor. You have a 50% chance this is correct; it could be TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of the ignition stroke. If the engine won't start, carefully remove the distributor so you maintain the rotor position, rotate the rotor shaft 180° and reinstall. Now if the engine runs you can set the timing.

Note: if the screwdriver blade on the end of the distributor shaft doesn't engage the slot on the oil pump (you won't be able to get the distributor to seat properly), then turn the oil pump with a large clean screwdriver so it lines up properly.

If the vacuum advance hits something before you can rotate the distributor body to the correct timing position, you'll have to shift everything around by at least one gear tooth on the cam shaft (remove the distributor, keeping the rotor in the same position inside the distributor, tweak the oil pump slot in the direction you need to rotate the distributor to get your timing space, then re-install one or two gear tooth widths away from whatever was blocking the vacuum advance).

I want to change the timing belt of my car. Can you give me detailed instructions on how to do it.


I have pasted the instructions from autozone.com below, but I never recommend this chore for a novice. If the valve timing is not right, it can ruin your engine. If you have not done this before, I recommend you at least have a mechanic look at the belt before you close up the timing cover.


Removal & Installation

1.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft to set the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke for the No. 1 piston. The white mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the pointers on the timing cover. Once the engine is in this position, it must not be disturbed.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires. Remove the splash shield. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Remove the power steering pump and position it to the side without disconnecting the hoses. Remove the alternator.
  6. Remove the ignition coil cover. Remove the four ignition coils. Remove the throttle cable clamps and harness holder mounting bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  7. Properly support the engine using a block of wood under the oil pan. Remove the upper bracket.
  8. Remove the grommet from the upper cover. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) top dead center (TDC) sensor connector.
  9. Remove the side engine mount bracket.
  10. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor from the oil pump, without disconnecting the connector.
  11. Apply slight force to the timing belt at the midpoint between the camshaft pulley and the water pump pulley and check that the auto tensioner moves smoothly, if not replace it.
  12. Move the auto tensioner to remove tension from the timing belt. Remove the timing belt.

  1. Set the crankshaft to TDC. Align the TDC mark on the timing belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.
  2. Set the camshaft to TDC. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be at the top. Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulley with the top edge of the cylinder head.
  3. Install the timing belt in a counterclockwise sequence, starting with the drive pulley.
  4. As required, replace the auto tensioner assembly.
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6. Reprogram the ECM/PCM engine idle characteristics. Be sure all electrical items are OFF.
  7. Start the engine. Hold the idle speed at 3000 RPM-s in park or neutral until the radiator fan comes on or the temperature reached 194 degrees.
  8. Let the engine idle for about five minutes with the throttle fully closed.
  9. If the radiator fan comes on during the five minutes, do not count this toward the five minute programming time.
  10. Set the clock.

2.0L Engine SOHC ENGINE
  1. Remove the drive belt and timing cover.
  2. Raise the car and support it with safety stands.
  3. Remove the right-hand splash shield and the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 11: The timing marks on both the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys must be aligned like this before removing or installing the timing belt — 2.0L SOHC engines 90983g66.gif

  4. Align the timing marks as illustrated in the accompanying illustration.
  5. Refer to the accompanying illustration and remove the timing belt as follows:
    1. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt (1).
    2. Use an 8mm Allen wrench, and turn the tensioner (2) counterclockwise 1⁄4 turn.
    3. Insert a 1⁄8 inch drill bit in the hole (3) to lock the belt tensioner in place.

    5. Inspect the belt for damage and signs of oil leakage. To install: NOTE: Install the timing belt over the sprocket in a counterclockwise direction starting at the crankshaft. Keep the belt span between the crankshaft and camshaft tight when installing the belt over the camshaft.
  6. Install the timing belt and remove the drill bit.
  7. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 15–22 ft. lbs. (20–30 Nm).
  8. Rotate the engine two complete revolutions and make sure the timing marks are aligned.
  9. Install the timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley.
  10. Install the right-hand splash shield and the drive belt.
  11. Start the car and check for proper operation.
DOHC ENGINE NOTE: A camshaft alignment timing tool (No. T94P-6256-CH or equivalent) and a crankshaft Top Dead Center (TDC) timing peg tool (No. T97P-6000-A or equivalent) are required for this procedure.   1. Remove the spark plugs.
  2. Rotate the crankshaft to TDC.
  3. Locate and remove the plug bolt by the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (refer to the illustration) and install the TDC timing peg. Fig. 15: Remove the plug bolt by the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and install the TDC timing peg 90983g70.gif

  4. Raise the car and support it with safety stands.
  5. Unfasten the splash shields bolts and remove the shield.
  6. Lower the car and remove the water pump pulley.
  7. Remove the valve cover and the timing belt covers.
  8. Align the camshafts and install the camshaft alignment tool on the back of the camshafts as illustrated. Fig. 16: Align the camshafts and install the alignment tool 90983g76.gif
    WARNING
    If the camshaft belt is being reused, mark the direction of the camshaft belt to the rotation of the camshaft prior to removal, or premature wear and belt failure could occur.
  9. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and relieve the tension on the belt by disconnecting the tensioner tab from the timing cover back plate.
  10. Slide the belt off the sprockets.

    To install:
  12. If, for any reason, the engine was disturbed, the camshafts moved or the sprockets replaced, perform the following procedure: NOTE: Make sure the correct notch in the pulley is indexed to the lower cylinder block.
    1. Position the crankshaft just prior to Top Dead Center (TDC).
    2. If not already done, locate and remove the plug bolt by the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (refer to the illustration) and install the TDC timing peg.
    3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the TDC peg. NOTE: Installation of the alignment tool into the exhaust camshaft may require the camshafts to be rotated clockwise.
    4. Install the camshaft alignment tool on the back of the camshafts.
    5. Install the timing belt and engage the timing belt tensioner tab into the upper timing cover backplate. NOTE: A 3⁄8 inch drive, 10mm, 2 inch torque adapter offset is required to tighten the tensioner bolt.
    6. Using a 6mm Allen wrench, adjust the tensioner until the index marks are aligned and tighten the bolt to 17–20 ft. lbs. (22–28 Nm).
    7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the TDC alignment peg, then remove the camshaft alignment tool.
    8. Remove the TDC peg tool and install the plug bolt.
    9. Install the timing and valve covers.
    10. Install the water pump pulley and the splash shield.
    11. Install the spark plugs. If the engine or the camshaft were not disturbed in any way, or the sprockets were not removed, perform the following procedure:

How to change a timing belt in a 2001 pt cruiser 2.4 liter


REMOVAL
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove right front wheel.
  3. Remove the right splash shield.
  4. Remove accessory drive belts.
  5. Remove crankshaft damper
  6. Remove the lower torque strut
  7. Disconnect exhaust system from manifold.
  8. Disconnect A/C pressure switch at rear of compressor housing.
  9. Lower vehicle and support engine with a jack.
  10. Discharge A/C system and disconnect A/C lines at coupling block
  11. Remove upper torque strut
  12. Remove screw attaching ground strap to strut bracket.
  13. Remove torque strut bracket from strut tower.
  14. Remove upper radiator support crossmember
  15. Remove power steering pump and bracket. Set pump aside. Do not disconnect lines from pump.</B>
  16. With engine properly supported, remove right engine mount through bolt.
  17. Raise engine with jack until engine support bracket bolts are accessible.
  18. Remove support bracket bolts.
  19. Remove support bracket.
  20. Remove upper timing belt cover fasteners and remove cover.
  21. Remove lower timing belt cover fasteners and remove cover
  22. CAUTION: When aligning crankshaft and camshaft timing marks always rotate engine from crankshaft. Camshaft should not be rotated after timing belt is removed. Damage to valve components may occur. Always align timing marks before removing timing belt.
  23. Before the removal of the timing belt, rotate crankshaft until the TDC mark on oil pump housing aligns with the TDC mark on crankshaft sprocket (trailing edge of sprocket tooth)
  24. NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket TDC mark is located on the trailing edge of the sprocket tooth. Failure to align trailing edge of sprocket tooth to TDC mark on oil pump housing will cause the camshaft timing marks to be misaligned.
  25. Install 6 mm Allen wrench into belt tensioner. Before rotating the tensioner, insert the long end of a 1/8” or 3 mm Allen wrench into the pin hole on the front of the tensioner .
  26. While rotating the tensioner counterclockwise, push in lightly on the 1/8” or 3 mm Allen wrench, until it slides into the locking hole.
  27. Remove timing belt. CAUTION: If timing belt was damaged due to incorrect tracking (alignment), the belt tensioner assembly must be replaced

INSTALLATION
  1. Set crankshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing.
  2. Set camshafts timing marks so that the exhaust camshaft sprocket is a 1/2 notch below the intake camshaft sprocket
  3. CAUTION: Ensure that the arrows on both camshaft sprockets are facing up.
  4. Install timing belt. Starting at the crankshaft, go around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets and then around the tensioner
  5. Move the exhaust camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to align marks and take up belt slack. NOTE: A new tensioner is held in the wound position by a pull pin.
  6. Remove the pull pin or Allen wrench from the belt tensioner.
  7. Once the timing belt has been installed and tensioner released, rotate the crankshaft two (2) complete revolutions. Verify that the TDC marks on crankshaft and timing marks on the camshafts are aligned as shown in .
  8. Install lower timing belt cover and tighten fasteners to 9 N·m (80 in. lbs.
  9. Install upper timing belt cover and tighten fasteners to 9 N·m (80 in. lbs.
  10. Install right engine support bracket. Ensure the power steering pump is properly located in mounting location on bracket. Tighten mount bracket bolts to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.)
  11. Lower engine into mounting position and install right engine mount through bolt. Tighten bolt to 118 N·m (87 ft. lbs.).
  12. Install power steering pump and bracket.
  13. Install upper radiator support crossmember
  14. Install torque strut bracket to strut tower.
  15. Connect ground strap to bracket.
  16. Install upper torque strut
  17. Connect A/C lines. Evacuate and recharge A/C system
  18. Raise vehicle.
  19. Connect exhaust system to manifold.
  20. Connect A/C pressure switch connector.
  21. Install crankshaft damper
  22. Install accessory drive belts
  23. Install lower torque strut
  24. Perform torque strut adjustment procedure
  25. Install right splash shield.
  26. Install right front wheel.
  27. Connect negative cable to battery.

How to replace timing belt 1995 vw golf


  1. remove air intake pipe, and box (upper and lower section)
  2. take off timing belt cover
  3. take off serpintine belt, and v belt
  4. rotate engine to TDC marks line up on crank and cam. camshaft says O^T on it and on the cover behind gear, crank has a notch in the pulley and a arrow on the cover to line up
  5. remove crank pulley 6mm allens not the 19mm 12 bolt
  6. make sure timing belt is still at TDC remove lower timing belt cover there is 3 bolts and a nut holding it on the nut is by the water pump and the bolts are on on top and 2 behind the crank pulley
  7. remove cover
  8. mark intermediate shaft shaft right above the crank pulley
  9. remove belt
  10. install reverse of removal make sure to line up all 3 pulleys cam crank and intermediate shaft or it wont run and depending on how bad it is out of time if you do it wrong you could bend valves
Assuming this is a 2.0 8v your question is pretty vague
