Question about 2002 Mini Cooper

1 Answer

The power steering suddenly quit on the car. No leaks. Plenty of fluid. Drove it home (10 minutes) with a great deal of arm power. 1/2 hour later started the car up to take it to a shop to get a prognosis but... the steering acts perfectly normal. And has continued to be normal for several days. What gives?

Here is a clip from an article on the web:

CA 04/23/08 N/A.00 invest quickly in a fire extinguisher! I love my S, but the power steering pump caught on fire. I was able to put it out with a nearby hose fortunately. Univ Mini said they had never heard of this problem tho there is a class action suit against Mini Corporate and I know of @least 24 other incidences, some total losses. Now, right after $3500. repair bill, car is overheating due to no cooling fan.

I would check for a class action against Mini and have them replace or repair the power steering unit

Make sure your system is charged properly. Also make sure your cooling system is properly clean and filled up to max levels. Sometimes low freon or old cooling system fluid will cause a delay in the A/C to work. Also chech to see if there is any black powder around your A/C clutch, if so, this is a sign that the system is about to go out of service. You can get a great deal on the part from Amazon.

Power steering out

You could have a leak in the lines connected to your power steering pump, or your pump could have failed all together, or the cables that run the pump could have snapped. Hopefully though you just have low power steering fluid levels and you can just buy some and fill the reservoir back up.

If the transmission fluid is full and the linkage connected then you have but one choice here the transmission has failed. I have seen this exact scenario come through the door of the shop dozens of times, drove fine then nothing the next day or an hour later or 10 minutes later. The cause, a faulty clutch pack or a failed hydraulic pressure pump or a internal leak in the high pressure fluid circuit that applies the clutch packs.

You will have to look where it is leaking from and get it fixed. Running without power steering fluid will eventually burn you power steering pump out and yes if you power steering is that hard to turn when out of fliud, it is dangerous.

Power steering quits after warmup

When the pump heats up it will quit working cause the pump on the inside is not pumping fluid to the rack pinion or your racket pinion is going bad. Have you checked the fluid level?

Hard steering

Check the Serpentine belt. If it's loose, not only will the power steering be very difficult but it will tend to run hot and eventually overheat. The belt may be worn and slipping as well. If this isn't the issue, you may have a leak coming from the power steering hose (you had to add fluid). Have someone in the car turning the wheel while you watch under the hood watching the power steering pump. With the fluid full, you should immediately see any leaks right away while the wheel is being turned. Hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck to you!
