2004 chev silverado ext cab. No Power steering

2004 chev silverado ext cab. No Power steering when I turn the wheel left, but have power steering when I turn the wheel right. I installed a new power steering pump, but that did not correct the problem. What else could it be?

When I turn the wheel to the left it is hard to turn, as if the truck was off. The steering wheel turns easy to the right, but hard to the left.

  • hollingsw632 Sep 07, 2009

When the steering wheel is turned all of the way to the right, and I try to turn the steering wheel to the left, it is hard to turn it the entire way.

  • hollingsw632 Sep 07, 2009

We checked out the mounts and they are okay.

Hi Hollings,

You description was very good, I need to ask for a specific.

When you turn to the left, the wheel is stiff like the engine is off or does it turn smoothly but the vehicle doesn't turn or seem to respond.

I'm trying to rule out broken mounts,

Also, if the wheel is all the way to the right, is it difficult turning back to the left the whole way, or half way. See where I'm going.?

Please comment back your findings

Best regards
Mike

Sorry about the delay. Had to double check some things.

Sounds like air in the high pressure lines needs to be bled out. Here's how.

    Bleeding:
(Warning: Working on an engine while its running can be
dangerous, Be careful, remove watches jewelry, hanging or loose
    clothes,etc)

    • Wheels straight ahead

    • Add fluid until the Cold mark is reached on the dipstick

    • Start the engine. Allow it to run for a few minutes. Stop the engine.

    • Check the level again. Cold level.

    • Start the engine

    • Turn the wheel from side to side, don't hit the stops, left, right, left right.

    • Stop and check again.

    • Keep doing this until there is no change in the level.

    • Road test the vehicle to check the steering.

    • Check the level again, this time bring it to the Hot level.
    That ought to do it

Most likely air in the lines to power steering pump. Check level and turn it all the way to the right until you hear a whining sound then turn to left until you hear the same noise repeat while making sure the reservoir is still full

Hard turning left

If it has power steering better be looking at replacing the power steering pump. It takes more power to turn the wheels at a stop then when moving I have had that problem and it was the pump. Good luck O by the way it is not hard to replace the pump you can do it in about an hour all you need is a power steering pump pulley puller. You can rent one at any auto zone store.

2004 Silverado crew cab has rattle around steering

If you feel this rattle while driving at low speed or turning at low speed it is likely a worn out steering shaft coupler, it is very common.

Left turn signal does not blink properly.

More than likely it is going to be your clock spring behind the steering wheel.
