Question about 1987 Ford Escort
1987 ford escort car starts runs for 5 - 10 min. shuts down wont start for 4 to 5 hours
You'll need to determine whether your lacking spark or fuel when no start happens, do you know how to do that?

You may need a new ignition module (it's the plastic module attached to the distributor). Your symptoms sounds like exactly the problem I had with my 1989 Escort, and that was the fix for mine.

Is the ignition coil getting hot? That would be the first thing I would be looking at. Swap it out for another one if you can beg steal or borrow one
