There is a fairly simple test to see if the starter is bad. You should have the same battery voltage at the starter on the larger cable that is bolted to the larger stud. You should also see battery voltage at the smaller wire at the starter with the key in the crank position. If these both check out than the starter is bad.
You can also monitor battery voltage while you try to crank. If battery voltage hold steady than the battery is probably good. You can also turn on the headlights and see if they dim. If battery voltage drops than the battery might be the culprit. Most auto parts stores can check the battery and they typically do not charge for this service.
The first thing to do is have the battery tested, just because you charged it doesn't mean it will stay charged if the cells are sulfated up or shorted.
Assuming you've checked the battery for a possible short and both the battery and the starter for loose connections, no click sounds like a faulty starter solonoid, which could work intermittently.
Take the battery somewhere to have it tested AFTER you do this: Use jumper cables to try and start your car. I had the same indications as you and it turned out my battery would not provide the amps (the real power in a battery) to start it.
If the car start when jumped, you need a new battery. There is a difference between starting and turning over. The familiar whrrwhrr whrr of an engine trying to start means something all together different.
Turn off ALL accessories when starting during a jump (AC, Radio, DVD players, GPs cigarettelighter plugs, lights)
