'05 Xterra engine shut off, seems electrical and sparatic.

Engine sputters while check engine light flashes rapidly. sometimes the 4wd light comes on, the VDC and SLIP light always comes on. My 2005 envoy is sputtering and the check engine light is on

Need to know what code pops up with the check engine light, some autoparts stores will check for free. Don't drive it if the check engine light starts flashing rapidly.

When my car nissan xterra is warmed the engine shut off

I have a customer with a 2000 Nissan Xterra 3.3 liter V6 with 180k miles. He stated that while driving on the highway the vehicle is fine. Once he exits the highway and drove on surface streets the engine stumbles, sputters and shuts down when he stops. The fuel pump is located under the right side rear seat. I removed the inspection cover to view the electrical connections. No problem there. I drove the vehicle for approx 20 minutes and it hesitated a little but not enough for me to come to a good conclusion. I needed the engine to heat up some more so I drove to Panda Express for lunch. I got my lunch to go, return to the vehicle and started the engine to eat while the engine idled. After my lunch was over I drove back to my customer's house. On the way God bless me with what I was searching for...the engine started to sputter. To shorten this story I replaced the distributor with a brand new assembly from AutoZone($233.65). Once I removed the factory distributor I spun it by hand and that's when I could feel that bearings were rough & worn.
Problem solved and my customer is happy.

Car drives fine sometimes then it will sputter and not go above 2000 rpms car wont go. sometimes wont start sometimes will. its a 2005 ford escape. the check engine light has been on for two years and has...

sputter, backfires, droping of rpm's usually coz of fuel stravation, check fuel pumps, fuel filter, cars with carbs checks fuel floats fuel line... if fuel line is blocked will result with the same symptoms... another angle you need to check is electrical... uneven or unstable electric supply will result to the same problem... if your encourtering bad smell, maybe you have an overheat engine, or oil level is very low... check brakes maybe you have a broken brake linnings { this just pops up to my head}...

The issue is your Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) and more than likely also the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT) which is part of the MAF housing. Both are probably malfunctioning. This can be due to an overused/very dirty air filter, or even an aftermarket air filter (that uses oil on the filter element), or diriving in very dusty/dirty areas.

2 fixes.
1) Get MAF cleaner of Electrical connection cleaner in a spray can from your local auto parts store. Locate the MAF, which is on the intake tube, drivers side, just after the air filter. It is held down by 2 hex screws. remove it (try not to touch the metal with your hands, and DO NOT touch the little sensors that look like wire resistors you will see inside, if you touch them, it will no longer work!), spray it VERY WELL with the cleaner (use the whole can if you feel the need) let dry in ambient air for at least 10 minutes, re-install and like magic, your car will start & run, probably better than before you had the issue. The CATCH IS, this can end up being a short term fix, may happen again after 10 miles, or 20,000 miles, but it will more than likely happen again.
2) Replace the MAF with a new unit, or have your vehicle serviced under warranty, and have the dealership replace this part.
