I have a Ford F 250 desiel pickup and it shut off on me today and it won't start. It turns over but it smokes really bad and doesn't start. I checked the fuses and fuel filters but seem to be okay. Any suggestions?

Are you able to start your vehicle in both park and neutral? if not then you might be looking at a new prndl switch. The vehicle not staying in gear while driving sounds like quad drivers though. Burnt out quad drivers will not relay proper v-rev to the the ecu and can burn it out as well turning a 300 dollar job into a 2k job. I worked at ford and we offered a diagnosis for 100 bucks but i would recommend getting the actual work done cheaper somewhere else as we charged 95 an hour labor.
This may be an indication of a poor battery connection, a slipping (worn or cracked) serpentine drive belt, or a bad battery.
Corrosion around the battery cables prevents the alternator from replenishing full power back to the battery
A bad drive belt tends to slip around the alternator and like in #1, doesn't replenish full power back to the battery
A bad battery with a dead cell won't accept a full charge.
Not mentioned above and less likely is a bad alternator. If you don't have a bad battery connection or a worn drive belt, I'd recommend having the electrical system checked out (most chain auto parts stores will do a free check).
The check engine light has nothing to do with the running lights on the vehicle. Chances are that the headlight switch has gone bad, good luck, Dont forget to rate.
