Is the check engine light on? If so, rent a scanner and read out any codes--follow the clues to repairs. One quick check for spark is to pull one of the spark plug wires and hook the wire to a spare plug then lay the plug on engine metal. Watch for regular sparks as the engine turns over (it helps to have a extra person to run the starter.

What would cause gas to be in the oil

On this 1999 silverado there are only a few things that would cause gas in the oil system one being a bad leaking fuel preassure regulator or a leaking injector. the engine should be running rough or rich and should have turned on the engine light. there are not any other ways to get gas in the oil but these are the most common but again the engine would not run to good and the check eng light would be on. the injector depending on the injection system would flood out the cylinder and make it skip inorder to get gas in oil, the most common would have to be the regulator leaking, but that would also make it run rich, if you remove the upper intake pelinum and turn ignition on but DONT try to start engine, a matter of fact dissconnect coil wire to avoid spark or a fire. with key on watch for fuel leaking out of regulator. have someone turn key on as you look at regulator.

I just replaced a fuel pump on my 1999 chevy 4.8l and now it will not start at all. I can hear the fuel pump turning on but when I try to start it, it is acting like it isnt getting any gas.. checked all...

Try this------- turn ignition on, wait for pump to stop, then turn back on, do this about 5 times so the pump can build up pressure in the line.
After the 5th time, hold the throttle down about half way, if there isn't some other problem, it should fire up.

Hi, under the hood you will have a electrical box with about 4 relays in it. You will find one that is marked fuel. The relays are the same, so try changing 1 with the fuel one. They should be marked on the inside cover. This happened to me, and after switching relays, it was fine. I bought another for $11.95 to carry with me. Mine was a 2000 Silverado 1500. Please get back to me and let me know if this does the trick!

'99 silverado will turn over but won't start. I have a new battery, 6 month old starter, new plugs, new distributor cap and rotary button. I used to be able to turn the ignition on and off real quick and...

I'd start with one of these and move on to the next.

Fuel
Spark.

Is it getting fuel? You should have an "in tank" electric fuel pump. When you turn the key halfway (just before turning the engine/starter over), you should hear the fuel pump prime. Easy way to check is to look in the throttle body while someone turns the key to the "on" position. You should see/smell the fuel. You can also listen to the gas tank while the key gets turned. You should hear the fuel pump run.

To check spark, pull a spark plug out, put it back on the plug wire and rest the electrode end of the plug up against the engine or exhaust manifold and have someone turn the engine over. You should see the spark plug firing. Don't hold the plug or wire while doing this. You'll get zapped if it's working ok.

If these both check out ok, then take a look at your firing order. If it's off by a significant amount, it may not fire. I've seen this happen when a cap/rotor/wires were changed and the wire/rotor was not positioned on the correct cylinder. (Most of the time they will at least fire or backfire, but either not stay running or run REALLY badly if the firing order is off.

While driving the tach drops to zero and the truck starts to breakup , like its running out of gas or no spark, then it catches back on

You may have an electronic control module failing. (ignition module).

The RPM signal comes thru it.

Also if the crank sensor is dropping out the engine will act like its shutting off and catching which would also cause the rpm to drop out.
