Question about 2000 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

The threads are stripped and the plug won't seat

My 2000 Protege DX has 178,000 miles. Just had to replace the coil-it was melted and the plug was loose and came out without a wrench. Now the new plug won't screw in because there are no threads. What do I need to do?

The only correct way to fix your problem is to remove the head and either replace it or have the plug hole re-welded and tapped. That said, there is another option. Install a helicoil thread repair. This can be done in-car if you have a straight unobstructed access to the bad hole because you need to drill and tap threads for the coil. In doing that, you need to consider that some filings will go into the combustion chamber. I usually crank the engine over without the plug installed and use a vacuum to get as much out of there as I can. Only other ting I need to mention is that helicoil has a cross bar at the end that needs to be broken off after install...if you drop it it can so bad things in the engine, or just harmlessly exit through the exhaust. One rule for plug install...always use antisieze compound on plug threads and never forget to tighten any. (two main causes of what you are now looking at.)
good luck, hope it's an easy one.

Repair shop says spark plug was stripped, had to pull off the head of 2006 kawaski volcun 900. Shop says spark plug was sideways & all 4 valves are leaking, so needs a new head.

Not necessarily-- plug holes can be reclaimed by using a product called heli-coils . These are threads that when placed in a pre tapped hole ( stripped thread made oversize) and are of stainless steel and make the finished product the same as the original

valves can be ground again and seat inserts can be replaced or ground again to provide a new seat for the valves

Find your self an accredited engine reconditioning engineer shop and get a second opinion and a quote before you buy a new head

bad fuel injectors. bad spark plugs - inspect and or replace -- bad spark plug wires - test ohms resistance of the spark plug wires with a multi meter (5 bucks at harbor freight) -- or simply replace the spark plug wires.
How was it you tested the coil and spark at the plugs?

I'd lean more towads faulty fuel injection, if you go to repai this, please be sure to add a quality fuel tank cleaner like lucas (the larger the bottle the less the cost per ounce - and works VERY well), You may also want to be sure to replace the fuel filter...

Cheapest way out would be to drill out the hole to the prescribed diameter, then tap new threads with the provided tap, and insert a Heli-Coil, which is a thread inside of a thread, to deal with situations like this. Napa carries Heli-Coil kits in all different thread sizes. I recently used one of these kits to repair stripped out rocker arm bolt holes, and it worked great. And I still have a few coils left for a rainy day.

I can't get the spark plug tight on a 2000 Lincoln towncar

If the spark plug is turning and the threads are properly seated in the threaded hole, then the threads are stripped out. The only way the threads can become damaged is using a wrench to start the threading process. Spark plugs should always be started by hand, even if a socket and extension is used, it should be turned by hand, not with a ratchet. Unless the spark plug was cross threaded before, verify the threads are engaging and turning by hand only. Otherwise the hole will need to be re-threaded and will require head removal to do it correctly and keep metal from entering the combustion chamber during the process, thus causing internal engine damage.

Replace fuel filter on 2000 mazda protege

A 2001 Mazda Protege (actually, all models from 1999-2003 including the DX, LX, ES, Mazdaspeed, and Protege 5) does not have an inline fuel filter. The only fuel filter it has is a "strainer" or a "screen", which looks like a nylon mesh "sock". This strainer is connected to the fuel pump, located in the gas tank. Although this fuel strainer does not require periodic replacement, it is recommended that it be changed if you are replacing the fuel pump.

I want to install an aftermarket tachometer in a 1997 Mazda Protege Dx, which does not utilize a coil in it's ignition system. Anyone knows where to get the signal from? Thanks!

some tachs can take the signal from one of the spark plug wires; you just thread the wire into the bood with the plug, or into the other end of the spark plug wire.

They are the ignition coils, the spark plugs are under them. When you have them off before pulling the spark plugs make sure the holes the plugs are in do not have oil in them, if so you will need new coil boots, plugwires and a valve cover gasket as well.

Where are the spark plugs on my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue and how do i change them?

Spark Plug: Service and Repair
J 43094 Spark Plug Boot Puller
1. Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2. Remove the ignition coil assembly.
3. Use the J 43094 in order to remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs.
NOTE: Allow the engine to cool before removing the spark plugs. Attempting to remove the spark plugs from a hot engine may cause the plug
threads to seize causing damage to cylinder head threads.
NOTE: Clean the spark plug recess area before removing the spark plug. Failure to do so could result in engine damage because of dirt or
foreign material entering the cylinder head, or by the contamination of the cylinder head threads. The contaminated threads may prevent the
proper seating of the new plug. Use a thread chaser to clean the threads of any contamination.
4. Remove the spark plugs from the engine.
NOTE: Use only the spark plugs specified for use in the vehicle. Do not install spark plugs that are either hotter or colder than those specified for the
vehicle. Installing spark plugs of another type can severely damage the engine.
NOTE: Check the gap of all new and reconditioned spark plugs before installation. The pre-set gaps may have changed during handling. Use a round
feeler gage to ensure an accurate check. Installing the spark plugs with the wrong gap can cause poor engine performance and may even damage the
1. Measure the spark plug gap on the spark plugs to be installed. Compare the measurement to the gap specifications. Refer to Spark Plug Usage.
Correct as necessary.
NOTE: Be sure that the spark plug threads smoothly into the cylinder head and the spark plug is fully seated. Use a thread chaser, if necessary,
to clean threads in the cylinder head. Cross-threading or failing to fully seat the spark plug can cause overheating of the plug, exhaust blow-by, or
thread damage.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the spark plugs to the engine.
Tighten the spark plug to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
3. Install the spark plug boots to the ignition coil assembly.

4. Install the ignition coil assembly.
