The Battery is JUNK.
I presume from your comment that you have to jump start it each time you wish to go anywhere?
Or is your information, not precise enough, as to what does and does not happen?
Come back to me?

Charge the battery--then remove the negative battery terminal. Scratch the terminal over the battery post--lots of sparks (everything turned off) mean something is shorting to ground. Remove the alternator heavy wire connection and cover the wire end with a towel or paper to insulate it from ground. Retry the negative battery terminal again as before--no sparks, replace the alternator (shorted diode). If still sparks, reconnect the alternator wire, then check for hidden lights that are on (glove box, under hood light). If still get sparks, start pulling and replacing fuses, while checking for sparks each time a fuse is out. At some point, you should find the fuse that controls whatever the short/load is in.

Can you use starter fluid to try to get the car going ?

You can, for the most part engine starters are Ether(highly combustible). The car may not continue to run after the starter is burnt off if there are more complications than simply starting the vehicle.
Check to see if fuel is reaching the engine. Check if you have ignition spark to the engine.
Did you run the battery flat(the need to jump the battery)trying to start the engine or was the battery run flat because of a lack of charge? This may indicate an alternator or battery problem.

Clicking noise from engine when tryng to start will not turn over

This means you have a flat battery. If you turn on the head lights and they are dim then it confirms a flat battery.

Cherrokee jeep immobilised, after battery went flat. jumped battery, disconnected battery and reconnected to try to re set alarm, phobb works,on alarm but when key turns no turn over,?

If by turning over you mean that the engine isn't turning when you turn the key, then you have a failure in the starting system. (check battery, connections, relay and starter) If the engine turns but dosen't start, try locking and unlocking the drivers door to re-set the security system.

5 miles is not enough to recharge battery. Have battery completely recharged or take it to major auto parts store where they can test battery,
What caused battery to go "flat"? Did you leave dome light on?
