Question about 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport, 2 dr. 4.0 liter. I am having a problem with the torque converter lockup. It doesnt disengage normally. It will disengage if I tap on the brakes, but after about 3 seconds it will lock up again

Yes, that is supposed to be how it works, but that is the only way is disengages. I can press on the throttle until it downshifts into 3rd, but it wont disengage lockup while pressing down on the throrrle. If I let off the gas for a second, then press on the gas, it will disengage, but for example, going up a hill, it will not disengage on its own. I have to keep pressing the gas till it downshifts to 3rd. I hope this explanation helps. Also I noticed today, I was at cruising speed, about 60-65, while pressing on the gas, tapped the brakes, then it disengaged. Thanks in advance for your help

That is the way that the lock up TC should operate. This is what happens:

When the computer sees that you are at a set speed. or light accel, you are in 3rd gear or 4th, it will lock up. If you increase throttle, put your foot on the break or take your foot off the gas it will take it out of lock up. It will wait for a shor time then re-engauge. Hope this helps.

Ok. ive posted about my 93 buick park ave dieing when i stop . i was told brake booster which made sence but didnt what uggg!. someone told me harmonic balancer. thoughts?

If that happens after you drove at speeds over 60km/h, there is a good chance that the lock up torque converter of your transmission does not disengage; to test that, drive the car at normal highway speed for a little while and put the gear selector in NEUTRAL before you stop. If the engine keeps on running, there's your problem

Transmission modulator 1996 4wd Ford explorer locstion

I think this is an electronic trans with no modulator. Overdrive is really not a gear but rather torque converter lockup. Torque converter may have completely failed.

Dr.wheels will not engage in cold weather 4 wheel dr.

Torque Converter has to do with the trans

Why are you guessing at things

Google those issues

Wrong time of year to be diagnosing tranfer issues
you do that in warm weather

May be related to the front axle engagement due to the cold

I have a problem with my ford idleing, it stalls sometimes at street lights. o2 sensor? where is it, how can i find it?

Depending on the engine in your explorer you may have 2,3 or 4 o2 sensors. these sensors are located screwed into the exhaust system, one before and one after the cat converter, if the truck has two converters then there will be 4 sensors. the problem you listed is that it stalls at idle or stop lights, this sounds alot like a bad idle air control valve which is very common on fords, also try cleaning the throtlebody, use cleaner and a tooth bruch open the throtle plate and clean good, if this doesnt help then i would look at the idle control valve. hope this helps.

Enginge shuts off when in reverse

Does it do it when putting the car in drive? It could be your lockup solenoid or possibly a bad torque converter. Please do not take my word for it, take it to a licensed ford mechanic (have it towed I should say)
