What is the adverage time to replace H1 brakes 1998 hummer

I was checking to see what the adverage time to replace brake pads/shoes, calipers, discs etc. on an H1 front and back either together or idependent

    Thanks, that is good advice. I think I asked the question wrong, I meant how long does it take to change those components. But thanks that does provide releif as there are no problems currently; knock on wood.

Depends on your driving habits. One of the best indicaters if you have never added brake fluid is the level in your master cyclinder. Rotors: if you feel a pulsation in the brake pedal under normal breaking.

Check this REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see Figures 1, 2 and 3 / click over images for zoom )

CAUTION Older brake pads or shoes may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.
  1. Remove 1 / 2 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the cotter pin and guide pin.

  1. Remove the caliper locating pin cover and remove the locating pin.
  2. Swing the rear disc brake caliper away from the brake rotor and anchor plate. There is no need to remove the parking brake cable or brake hose.
  3. Remove the inner and outer disc brake pads.
To install:
  1. If installing new disc brake pads, use rear caliper piston adjuster T87P-2588-A or similar tool, to rotate the rear disc brake piston clockwise, retracting the caliper piston. This will allow room for the new brake pads.

  1. Install the inner and outer disc brake pads.
  2. Swing the rear disc brake caliper back into position over the disc brake pads.
  3. Clean the locating pin threads and apply 1 drop of a thread locking agent or similar sealer.
  4. Apply a small amount of disc brake caliper slide grease to the shaft of the locating pin.
  5. Reinstall the locating pin and torque to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  6. Reinstall the guide pin and the cotter pin.
  7. Adjust the parking brake by operating the parking brake control several times.
  8. Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly. Torque the lug nuts to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Adjust the parking brake by operating the parking brake control several times.
  11. Pump the brake pedal several times to achieve a good pedal before attempting to move the vehicle.
  12. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder fluid reservoir and add fluid as necessary.
  13. Road test the vehicle and check for proper brake system operation.

Tools required to change brake pads on 2003 impala


Removal & Installation
  1. Siphon 2 / 3 of the brake fluid out of the master cylinder.
  2. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the wheel stud for re-installation purposes. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Install 2 lug nuts to secure the rotor in place when the caliper is removed.
  4. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard shoe. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the caliper pistons are pushed into the caliper bore enough to slide the caliper assembly off the rotor. Use care not to tighten the C-clamp too far or the outboard shoe retaining spring will be deformed and require replacement.
  5. Remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the mounting bracket.
  6. DO NOT disconnect the brake hose from the caliper or allow the brake hose to support the weight of the caliper. Support the caliper on a piece of wire out of the way.
  7. Remove the outer brake pad from the caliper using a suitable prying tool to lift the outboard shoe retaining spring so that it will clear the caliper center lug and pull the brake pad out of the caliper.
  8. Remove the inner brake pad by unsnapping the shoe springs from the piston.

To install:


  1. Clean all parts well. If the brake pads were worn so badly that the brake rotor is damaged, it must be replaced. Light scoring of the rotor surfaces not exceeding 0.060 inch (1.5mm) in depth is not harmful to brake operation and may result from normal use. Brake rotors may be refinished. Do not use a rotor that, after refinishing, will not meet the thickness specification cast in the rotor. Always replace with a new rotor.
  2. If not done at removal, now use a C-clamp and clamp both pistons at the same time with a metal plate or wooden block across the face of both pistons. Take care not to damage the pistons or caliper boots.
    NOTE After bottoming the pistons into the caliper bore, lift the inner edge of each caliper boot next to the piston and press out any trapped air. Make sure each boot convolution is tucked back into place. Boots must lay flat.
  3. Inspect the caliper bushings for wear. Replace as necessary. Carefully inspect the slide bolts for corrosion. If corrosion if found, use new parts including the bushing assemblies when installing the caliper. Do not attempt to polish away corrosion. Lubricate caliper slide bolts with silicone grease.
  4. Install the new inner disc brake pad in the caliper by snapping the shoe retainer springs into the piston making sure both sets of locking tabs are seated in the caliper pistons. The pad must seat flat against the pistons.
  5. Install the outer pad into the caliper by snapping the outboard shoe retaining spring over the caliper center lug and into the housing slot. The pad will slide up onto the caliper and the retaining ring will lock into place on the groove in the caliper.
  6. The outer pad wear sensor should be at the trailing edge of the shoe during forward wheel rotation.
  7. Install the caliper mounting bolts and torque to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  8. Remove the 2 nuts temporarily securing the rotor.
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly and tighten to specification.
  10. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  11. Check the brake fluid level and top off as necessary.
  12. Road test the vehicle to ensure the proper brake performance.

What parts do I need to do a complete brake job on a 1998 Ford Thunderbird...front and back


1. Machine or replace rotors and/or Drums
2. New Disc Pads and /or Brake Shoes & springs for brake shoes
3. New or recond Brake Booster
4. New or recond Master Cylinder
5. New or recond Disc brake calipers and/or wheel Cylinders
6. Brake fluid
7. Check all the brake fluid lines for any damage

Replace rear brake pads


Rear disc brake pads offer better performance and are not as affected by moisture like conventional brake shoe style brakes are. Rear disc brakes are similar to front disc brakes. The main difference is that rear disc brake systems must incorporate the emergency brake system. There are two methods widely used for the emergency brake with rear disc systems. The first system is a brake shoe inside the brake disc that is actuated by the emergency brake lever. The second is a screw style actuator inside the brake caliper. When activated the brake pads are forced into the brake disc and held tightly by the emergency brake lever.
READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING
Step 1 - Identify Rear Disc Brake Components

Step 2 - Removing the Rear Brake Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_2.jpg To replace rear brake pads and rotors the rear brake caliper needs to be removed. First loosen the rear brake caliper mount bolts and remove them. Turn counter clockwise.
Step 3 - Lift Rear Brake Caliper from The Caliper Mount
rear_brake_pads_3.jpg After the caliper mount bolts have been removed, gently lift the brake caliper from the caliper mount. Inspect the caliper slides; they should move freely in the caliper mount. Remove rear brake pads and hardware.

Step 4 - Removing Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_4.jpg With a socket wrench or other appropriate removal tool, loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove bolts and lift the caliper mount and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole. Tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub holding on tightly, using both hands. You do not want to drop the rotor.

Step 5 - Removing Rear Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor.jpg Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole, tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub, hold on using both hands and do not drop.

Step 6 - Install New Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor_2.jpg Check the new rotor against the old brake rotor to make sure they are the same size. Clean the mating surface on the wheel hub before the new brake rotor is installed. Reinstall rotor retainer screw.
Step 7 - Reset Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brakes_7.jpg Before new brake pads can be installed, the rear brake caliper must be reset. The reset tool winds the piston back into position so the new brake pads will fit. This style of brake caliper will not compress with a clamp tool; it can only be reset with the proper reset tool.
Step 8 - Reinstall Rear Caliper Mount and Install New Rear Brake Pads
rear_brake_rotor_3.jpg After the caliper has been reset, reinstall caliper mounting bolts and make sure the bolts are tight. Then match up the old brake pads to the new brake pads. They should be exactly the same except, of course; the old ones will be worn out. Check the new brake pads for proper fit and install any brake hardware that is required.
Step 9 - Remount Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brake_rotor_4.jpg Reinstall the brake caliper, align brake pad hardware and reinstall caliper mounting bolts. (Note: align the rear peg of the brake pad to the groove in the caliper piston.) Recheck and retighten all caliper and caliper mount bolts. Bleed brake system to relieve any air in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly. This operation forces the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE until proper brake pedal operation resumes. When test driving vehicle listen for any unusual noises during the operation of the brakes.
WARNING! Always have the vehicle under inspection on level ground, in park with the emergency brake on. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and necessary clothing before inspection or work begins. Never crank an engine over when anyone is near the battery or engine. Always have an operational fire extinguisher close by, obey all first aid instructions in the event of an injury. Never stand in front or behind a vehicle when cranked over or running. When engine is cranked over keep hands and clothing away from rotating components. Never move a car without proper brake pedal operation.

I want to repair the brakes on a 1999 Chrysler Town & Country minivan - Would like instructions and a picture/diagram, if possible.

CAUTION

  1. Remove brake fluid from the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir until the reservoir is approximately 1/2 full. Discard the removed fluid.
  2. Raise and safely support the of the vehicle. Remove the wheels.
  3. Remove the brake caliper assembly that requires brake pad replacement.
  4. Support the caliper out of the way with a strong piece of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose or damage to the brake hose will result.
  5. If necessary, compress the caliper piston into the bore using a C-clamp. Insert a suitable piece of wood between the C-clamp and caliper piston to protect the piston.
  6. Remove the outboard disc brake pad from the caliper by prying the brake pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Slide the brake pad down and off the caliper.
  7. Remove the inboard disc brake pad from the caliper by pulling the brake pad away from the caliper piston until the retaining clip on the pad is free from the caliper piston cavity.
To install:
  1. Be sure the caliper piston has been completely retracted into the piston bore of the caliper assembly. This is required when installing the brake caliper equipped with new brake pads.
  2. If equipped, remove the protective paper from the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.
  3. Install the new inboard disc brake pad into the caliper piston by pressing the pad firmly into the cavity of the caliper piston. Be sure the new inboard brake pad is seated squarely against the face of the brake caliper piston.
  4. Install the outboard disc brake pad by sliding it onto the caliper assembly.
  5. Install the brake caliper assembly.
  6. Install the wheels and lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts, in a star pattern sequence, to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm). Apply the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained.
  7. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid as necessary. Road test the vehicle.

Replaced shoes, drums,caliper,and springs on rear wheels and know in reverse the right tire locks what is it ?


the shoes not being adjusted properly or if one shoe has more pad than the other like a primary and secondary them wrong will also create this issue, also brake fluid on drums and shoes.

Rear caliper piston how to get it to move back inorder to change pads


take a c clamp put one of your old brake pads over the piston and tighten the clamp until piston goes back the whole way

Replacing rear brakes on a hummer h1 2000


ase labor chart shows 3.6 hours normal time for these repairs. avg actual time is 3.5 to 4 hrs and this includes pressure bleeding system.
