Question about Chevrolet Blazer

1 Answer

2005 Chevy Blazer - Key gets stuck in ignition on a random basis. It will not turn all the way to home to release key so battery runs down if key is left in over night. There is also no button (hidden or otherwise) on the column that will release it manually.

It does not feel jambed but I have some additional info after troubleshooting for a while. I removed the center console cover and found a cable of wires with a connector on the end that was plugged into the base of the gear shift. If I disconnect and reconnect the cable then the key will release. It works everytime. I also discovered a bit later that all I really needed to do was press on the connection (as if making sure it is seated all the way in) to get the key to release. This way I leave the console cover on, just not screwed down so I can lift up the cover, reach under and press the connection when the key will not turn to home.

My next phase of testing revealed that by putting the gear shift into Park with a little extra force than is normally needed, the key releases as well. I have had this fail a couple times so I had to press the connector to release the key but it seems to work better when coming from drive into Park rather than from Revese into Park.

I hope this helps someone. At least I have some good info for a mechanic if I have to go that route. Any additional comments based off of this new information is much appreciated and welcome. I would love to get to the bottom of this completely if someone out there has a good explanation.

So, there are two main areas for problems, the lock cylinder itself, and the rest of the system. This involves a rod, sometimes tilt column, and a switch.
Typically, the issue is a lock issue, to tell, where, does turning the key feel like it is jambed, or does it feel that the lock can turn , but something else is jambed?

We cannot get the key out of the ignition and it is stuck on acc. and has run the battery down. What in the world is going on?

The battery needs a full charged to have the ignition keys pulled out. The other thing to that can cause the Ignition keys not to release.

In the Cobalt the problem is that there is a small bar in the shifter that is supposed to hit a micro switch and that bar can came out of place.
It will not hitting that micro switch to allow the ignition to release the key when the car is in park.
What to do is tear the center council apart and pull the whole shift mechanism out and reposition the bar and put it all back together. Yes it's a pain and time consuming
Good luck and hope this helps, and be careful not to damage the ignition lock, you could damage the wires in the ignition lock for the anti theft.

I have a 2000 Chevy Blazer. I can't get any current. No dash lights, no electric locks, etc and it obviously won't start. It does absolutely nothing when i turn the key. The gauges jump around randomly...

Check And Clean Your Battery Cables Really Good. Make Sure You Cut Some Of The Insulation Back From The Terminal To Make Sure The Cable Is Not Corodid Further Down.
