Hi

This problem can have a few causes - and given that you are hearing a whirling noise from the engine there is a possibility that it is turbo related.

However - these Volvo diesels are known to develop problems with the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor that can give off similar symptoms to these.

For a proper diagnosis it is important that you have the cars ECU computer scanned for fault codes - otherwise any repair is a complete stab in the dark. Given that turbos for these are very expensive it is important to rule out the MAF or other causes before going any further.

Other things that should be checked - damage/hole in intercooler pipe (where it passes the air filter) - also any leak in the air intakes can give off black smoke and lack of power.

Hope this helps. Please do rate this answer. Many Thanks.

I presume you are adding oil (topping up). If you are then you have a series problem with piston ring wear inside engine. Oil is getting past the wiper rings and getting into the combustion chamber and burning with the fuel. Need to rebuild or replace engine.

Black smoke from x5

Black smoke is a sign of engine overload, a restricted air supply, or a malfunctioning injector. For some reason, excess unburned fuel is being blown out of the exhaust.

if there is also black smoke coming out the exhaust - and the problem is intermittent - then it's the EGR valve - it sticks open - will need replacing.... Happened to mine this morning and this is what the Jaguar Assistance guy said. Mine is a 2006 2 litre X-type.

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

Smoke coming from exhaust at higher speeds or when putting foot down, also acceleration jerky like am blipping the accelerator not cruising used to cruise 110 no bother now its taking it to reach 100

If the smoke is blue, it is burning oil. If it is black or dark grey it is running way too rich, like your choke is stuck on. That would also explaing the jerky acceleration and poor response. Your fuel consumption will also skyrocket.

BLACK SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST AND NO POWER WHEN I PUT ME FOOT DOWN, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST? THANKS MARK

Generall black smoke indicated the burning of oil. This is due to oil slipping by the rings. If the rings are allowing oild to slip by then you will have poor compression which translates into no power when you put your foot down. IF the rings are bad you are looking at a rebuild. Probably cheaper to buy a replacement engine from a junkyard. The definitive test is to have a compression test performed

A clogged, overheated catalyst can do this, it sends a signal to the computer and lowers performance plus increases the gas usage.
