Question about 2005 Volvo XC90
When I put the foot down it starts to make this kond of whirling noise fron the engine it eases off at higher revs and dosent appear when cruising. At the same time as the whirling noise black smoke is comming out of the exhaust. Its a 06 volvo s40 2.0D
This problem can have a few causes - and given that you are hearing a whirling noise from the engine there is a possibility that it is turbo related.
However - these Volvo diesels are known to develop problems with the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor that can give off similar symptoms to these.
For a proper diagnosis it is important that you have the cars ECU computer scanned for fault codes - otherwise any repair is a complete stab in the dark. Given that turbos for these are very expensive it is important to rule out the MAF or other causes before going any further.
Other things that should be checked - damage/hole in intercooler pipe (where it passes the air filter) - also any leak in the air intakes can give off black smoke and lack of power.
Hope this helps. Please do rate this answer. Many Thanks.
