Try neutral. or in drive, but just crawling. Give light pressure to the stick and sort of let it just fall into 4x4

I have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee 6 cylinder. when i start to drive there is a **** slip, then it shifts in to first then second gear but does not shift in to third. when i release the gas it does a heavy...

sounds like a faulty transmission bud.

Could be low fluid, burnt fluid, or worn one-way clutch or brakebands.

Best to let an autobox specialist try it out and give you a full opinion.

1995 jeep grand cherokee transmission park to drive shift noise

Check transmission fluid level, then look at transmission linkage. Some are in a place where they can be bumped around and knocked out of place. Tweek the shifter a little on both sides of the resting position when you shift. If the noise goes away. It is probably linkage related. If you can sample the tranny fluid, check for burnt smell and or metal flakes. Aamco will check it free but dont let them sell you repairs as preventative measures. They will try.

Replace the Transmissions Control Module (TCM) that mounts on the driver's side firewall. I have had to do this twice with mine. Glad the TCM was under warranty.
