Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

2002 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 liter irregular idle. When I start my jeep it idles high and low and revs up and down and then the idle finally settles. After it settles, the engine kind of hiccups and a little bit of smoke comes out the exhaust. It does the same thing when I drive it. I have already had everything involving the fuel system replaced (ie. fuel pump, gas cap, fuel lines, fuel filter) and I put injector cleaner in it. Any ideas?

The shop tested it and confirmed all the fuel components needed to be replaced. It ran better for awhile, now it's acting up again. Not my car... my grandmother's. I think they jipped her. I'm about to clean the idle air control. thanks

You haven't changed everything...map sensor controls spark and fuel mixture as does the throttle position sensor, also check the idle control valve...Don't just buy stuff...do testing first.

Had similar trouble with a 1998 TJ 4.0. replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump. An engine code lead me to change the rear O2 sensor. Nothing worked until I changed the front O2 sensor. It did the trick!!!

1999 Jeep grand cherokee limited - irregular idle

I don 't know if I can solve it, but I had a very similar problem on a 2002 Grd Cherokee Laredo. It ended up being the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS). Unfortunately the part alone is about $125 and and total installed cost was about $250. It would idle high at first, then gradually work it self down to a normal idle. Once it was warmed up it it would have an up and down RPM during idling, and several times it stalled out at intersections. There was also a lot of transmission clunking going on when you put it in reverse or drive.
Runs like a dream now. Clunking is gone and idle speed is just right.

2004 jeep grand cherokee idling problem. Revs motor 200 to 500 rpms higher while driving.

I had the exact same problem on my 04 GC. I put some Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner in from Wal-Mart and it seemed to fix the problems right away. Let me know.

Back Firing, low idle while in drive, choking and dying

Check your fuel pressure, the regulator is on top right where the fuel lines connect to the fuel rail.

02 Grand Cherokee High RPM start. Cuts out when driving

Ckean throttle plate inside throttle body...They tend to get dirtier than their counterparts in carbureted engines due to lack of fuel spray that kept them clean. If no luck with that, clean idle air control valve on TB. When doing this, don't turn the plunger, just clean with carb spray and replace. do not loose "o" ring seal.
Good luck
