Question about 1990 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

Can't find the fuel pump on my 1990 4runner... want to replace it- engine cranks but start, can't smell any gas up at the motor despite pumping away at the throtle. just have a feeling it may be the best place to start- i know that some jeeps have the pump in the gas tank and i'm really just hoping its not the case on this 4runner- i've only owned it about a month and i'm going through and fixing everything before winter. this is a big one, though, because i can't start it!

it may be your fuel pump, take off your air cleaner and pump the gas with the engine off and see if you smell or see gas, then try it with someone turning the engine over and see if u can smell or see gas, if not your pump is probably shot

If the engine starts right up by spraying starting fluid into the air intake you likely have a defective fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank, the tank must be removed to replace the pump.

2009 chevy aveo ran out of gas now it wont crank

No crank to a mechanic means the starter motor doesn't spin the engine over, is this what you mean? Or do you mean the engine cranks over but will not fire up and run? If it is the latter have you added at least 3 gallons of gas to the tank to make sure the electric fuel pump inside the tank can properly prime? If not do that, also you can spray starting fluid into the engine engine air intake pipe after adding the 3 gallons and see if that gets it going. If it still will not start you have burned up the fuel pump and you will need to drop the fuel tank and replace the pump, remember the pump is cooled and lubricated by the gasoline it runs in, so when you run low on fuel or out you can very quickly severely damage the small electric fuel pump. Never let the gas gauge level go below 1/8 tank to prevent premature fuel pump failure.

Engine cranks well, half a tank of gas but won't start! Just cranks seems like gas not entering fuel system.

you may be correct, the first thing is to try starting fluid, spray in throttlebody and see if truck starts for a few seconds, if it does then its a fuel problem, mostly a bad fuelpump, start by doing this to see if it a fuel problem, then you can check all the fuses and check for power at pump, alot of times a bad pump will start by banging on bottom of tank while cranking engine if it starts then a bad pump for sure.

Cranks wont start, 98 Durango

check to see if getting fuel or if you smell gas when cranking if you smell gas you probably have a spark problem which will probably be a coil and or a pickup coil in your distributor replace coil and then distributor. If you are not getting gas most likely fuel pump in tank see if it will fire on starting fluid then replace fuel pump good luck
