I suggest that if you are going to do any maintenance on your car that you visit the autozone.com website and register the car. It doesn't cost anything and you will have access to a full online repair manual for the car. That comes in handy and is a good source for repair information. Sure hope this helped and best wishes.

The serpentine belt on a 2.4L is VERY loose after alternator replacement. Can I tighten it or is the tensioner or belt dead?

I think you are on the right track, suspecting the tensioner. It should spring back after you release it. There is a pretty heavy spring inside, it may have broken.

How do I replace a timing chain in an 1997 chevy caviller

Hi there,

Generally, in "chain" driven engines, it is not neccessary to change the timing chain unless it is seriously stretched or broken (only timing/cam "belts" require interval changing).

However, if you are experiencing the symptom of chain "rattle", then I would first reccommend you change to the correct grade of engine oil, then secondly, change the chain "tensioner".

How to change an alternator belt for a 96 chevy cavelier

go to http://www.mvreader.com/multiview/dayco/index.php?bgInterchange=1&l=n

They have diagrams for the routing of the new belt..
As for actually doing it.
1. you need to release the tension idler to release belt. This can be done with a simple ratchet, its spring loaded so it takes some muscle.
fit the new belt in the correct routing from the website i gave you and there you go.
