Does the starter turn the engine? If so, do you have a check engine light on? If yes, rent a scanner, read out the code(s) and follow to repairs. If the starter doesn't work, check the battery state of charge--turn on the lights (do they work?). If nothing, test the battery voltage at the battery posts--should read 12.6 volts (with the lights on). If it reads lower by several volts or more, then the battery is discharged--recharge the battery before going on. Remove the battery terminals and clean the posts and terminals, then coat them with an anti-corrosion grease. Try the starter again. If it now works and the engine runs, check the battery voltage with engine running--it should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If it reads 12.6 volts, then the alternator is not charging or the wire that connects the alternator output to the battery side terminal at the starter solenoid is open. While the engine is running, take the car to an auto parts dealer that offers free testing of electrical parts and have them check the alternator.

If you can start the motor starter but the engine still turn off,
it could be the timing belt problems.
Its usually happen while the cars running and then the engine goes off.

Also you can check ignition system, by put out one of spark plugs and start it, if you see a fire from the spark plugs, think is fine with the ignition system.

Several things coud cause this .. none good...
1. Bad gasoline (water in gas)
2. Head gasket blown.

You can check the "wiring" (spark):
Need another person to help
1. Set parking/emergency brake.
2. unplug one cable from a spark plug and place it on the motor or other metal
3. while "cranking" the engine, look for spark at end of sparkplug wire. It will probably spark... not an electrical problem
4. Don't touch the wire while the ignition is on .. it will shock you!

Use a can of "complete fuel system cleaner" not just an injector or throttle body cleaner. AutoZone ($9).

Hope this helps!

1990 crx base model honda civic want start

I would suggest an ignition module. If it is a rough idle at startup I would check the throttle position sensor. You can check that by starting the car and unplugging the TPS. If the car runs differently then chances are it is working fine.

1990 Honda Civic Stall out and wont immediately restart

Disassemble and clean the carb, particularly the jets. I suspect the charge light being on is a result of your destroyed battery, which needs to be replaced. Sta-bil over the winter and a smart trickle charger will prevent the problems you are having in the future...

Your oil pump, located in the oil pan, is not working. This is VERY serious and you should not run the engine until it is fixed.

Starting in hot weather

Turns out that Hondas are notorious for having starting problems during the summer (sometimes it also happens when you just run them for a short while). I have a 1990 honda civic lx and was having starting problems and noticed that it was mostly during hot days. I got my starter rebuilt but the problem continued. Also I noticed that my car was flashing CODE 16.
The flashing code, together with the starting problems, points to a problem with the MAIN RELAY.
Turn the ignition on and check for codes, pull the carpet back on the passenger side floor and look for the flashing LED, count the flashes--that'll be the code (there's a short pause inbetween codes).
The Main Relay is located under the dash on the driver side, usually on the left hand side, can be up against the left wall, it's a small black unit with a plug. You need to unscrew it from its mounting bracket first. Change the main relay and it should solve your summertime starting problem.
