Question about 1991 Volkswagen Passat

Open Question

I have a 1991 VW Passat, cars in decent shape, just spending a little time working on it to sell, I have issues with the ignition. I have replaced the ignition switch & when you turn the key to the start position, it does not light a test light at the trigger wire at the starter, this is the pretty much the last thing I have to repair on this car & it's at the point where it's starting to baffle me!! the car started with the key untill the battery went dead, now nothing!! A little help would be great, Thanks

Just got my keys locked in my vw transporter 1.9 tdi, no spare key, any way of unlocking the central locking?

any decent VW dealer can cut a key using the chassis # from the car.....(will need coding at sometime to work the ignition) OR you can use a screwdriver wrapped in a towel to prise the top of the door away, then fish them out with a wire coathager.(after, lower the window and bend the top of the door back into shape.)

Check engine light in my '07 VW passat 2.0t is on. Got codes P2015 (twice) and P2008 (twice) and EVAP system code P0456. What are these codes? Thx Phyllis

P2015 - Intake manifold runner position
P2008 - Intake manifold runner control circuit
P0456 - Evaporative Emissions System - Small leak detected

None of these are urgent, just annoying. And common problems with Audi's and VW. P2015 and P2008 were likely due to a software/sensor glitch, and did not necessarily require a replacement throttle flap motor. P0456 could be due to loose gas cap, but also was likely caused by carbon contamination from the evap cannister. I have all 3 codes on my 06 passat, and just live with them. I would estimate around 1000k conservatively to track down and fix from dealership.

Replacing the ECU on a 1999 VW Passat Sedan 1.8 Turbo

if u have an electronic key than security codes from ur key must be programmed into the ecu to match-- most ecu change overs on cars usually require a trip to the dealer so they can install their programming most auto shops dont have the funds to, or customer base to spend thousands [every auto maker has their own software and update and change every year]-- every year on reprogramming software for ecu-- they may do only 1 or 2 a year

Broken sunroof. on one side (left) for a: 1993 vw passat cl

Each side of the sunroof has a cable. Over time, the track gets dirty and the mechanism sticks, which causes the cable to break. Continuing to use the sunroof will cause additional components to break. Repair involves removing the headliner. I spent $700+ to get mine repaired, which involved spending about $400 on special order replacement parts. Sunroof repair is fairly specialized and not something that the average Joe is going to be able to figure out.

Keys no longer work

sounds like it has some wiring issues with the ignition...the wires were loose before thus the intermittent the wires are completely broken and no longer making contact... i'd recommend getting a new ignition switch...the wires would have to be loose in that little mechanism. It is completely enclosed so you can't service the switch itself. Getting to it requires the removal of the steering wheel and column with column accessories. hope this helps with ID'ing the problem.

You cannot change the bulb - the indicator is a sealed unit - mine failed because water got into a crack.  VW will sell you the unit - you need to dismantle the wing mirror to fit it - took me about 20 mins.  Cost of the unit was about £17

Rectangular shape with knobs light on my 2003 VW Passat

Could it be a battery shape? Red in color - means "Generator". VW recommends not driving if this stays on. Alternator belts may be loose or broken and/or electrical malfunction

VW Passat turbo broken

Pricing for the replacement will vary widely based on who does the work, but you'll typically find better prices at an independent shop than at a dealership. When you choose an indie shop though, make SURE they're a Euro specialist. You honestly don't want a guy working on your high-tech turbo engine when he spends his days wrenching on Mustangs and Chevy trucks. As for whether you have to do it - yes you do. The turbo is an integral part of the car and the car won't run well at all (and will likely degrade further) if you don't fix it.

1991 vw passat 9A 16v 2l B Charging and instrument cluster problem One day car did not start-turn key and nothing at all.(no power to inst. cluster no turning, nothing) One hour later it did turned on and cranked. and run fine. Next day repeated.Battery was dead. When jumped jumper cable melted. The alternator was shorting. Replaced battery and alternator. But alternator is not charging.Alternator tested as good.Replaced anyway, for another alternator that also tested as good just for the heck of it. Still not charging and whole instrument cluster and radio have no power from the very first replacement repair till now. Car will run just fine with out other el. problems as far the battery have charge above 6-7 v. I checked fuses in fuse/relay panel.Did not see any fuse burned. Is there fusible link on charging system or other fuse or relays to check besides the ones on the fuse/relay panel? I there relay that control this? I know that is grounded good. I know that is connected to + battery good. Alt+battery good. There is small blue wire running from alternator?????? called the alt. control wire. I think is says d+ or something on the alt.terminal next to it. It seems that something prevents the alternator to output power. I measured the alt. terminal + and ground when connected and running and all I read is the battery voltage dropping. I think the blue small wire and instrument cluster are close connection to this problem. Unless there is fuse or relay that I missed to check. other possibilities- ECU. -Wiring harness. First- where is all the fuses? and relays to check? fusible links? second -what is the blue wire ? third-instrument cluster involved? keep in mind that everything works besides inst cluster and charging when battery have charge above 6-7v. This car have disconnected and missing ABS and Security . Run grate for about a year till this happened. Rebuilded engine....Clean well maintained.. u4davidatgmaildotcom
